Sunscreen??

I tried searching this topic, but didn't get any results. I was wondering if anyone knows anything about the safety of sunscreen while pregnant. I assume that there must be some safe sunscreen since sun protection is important. I know lots of chemicals can get leached through the skin. I don't have my first appointment for a few more weeks, and am going to a bachelorette party that will hopefully involve lots of sun before I get to talk to the doc. Sorry if this is a dumb question, paranoid first time mom here. Also, how about bug spray? We will be on a lake in the woods. I appreciate any info. Thanks!

People have lot of differing opinions on lotions, makeup, etc. so I'd ask your doctor. I will tell you that the sunscreen I use even when not pregnant is called Coola- you can get it on Amazon. I love it because it does not have the many talked about dangerous chemicals present in many brands and it has a lot of vitamins and antioxidants, but my favorite thing it that it feel like REGULAR lotion, not sunscreen  and I can get an SPF 50 (I'm fair skinned). I actually use their spf 30 face sunscreen over my moisturizer every day ever since my dermatologist told me it's better to wear straight up sunscreen on your face than relying on spf in face cream and makeup. We'll see if she was right as I age! ;)

Shortly after finding out I was pregnant, I got worked up into a "safe for pregnancy skin care products" frenzy trying to figure out whether my daily moisturizer is dangerous to baby.  I only use a daily facial moisturizer with some SPF and regular body cream.  I also have "family friendly" subblock.  My quest for safe skin care products was short-lived.  I figure there are so many pregnant women out there who are smoking, drinking, doing drugs, working labour-intensive jobs, and malnourished, that I think I'll make it through this pregnancy without having to buy an entire new line of productions.  NOT to take away from anyone else's concerns; just my two cents!

I figure any kind of sunblock is better than no sunblock at all!

    "Insect Repellents and Pregnancy

    https://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/disasters/environmental.html

Pregnant women might ask if DEET is safe to be used during pregnancy. DEET does cross the placenta. However, the effects of DEET use in pregnancy have not been thoroughly studied. There have been no studies of picaridin use in pregnant women.

Infections spread by mosquitoes can be harmful to a developing baby. Therefore, the benefits of insect repellent use might outweigh any potential harm. To lower the risk of infections spread by mosquitoes, pregnant women should stay indoors during peak times of mosquito activity (usually dawn and dusk) and wear protective clothing. Pregnant women should apply insect repellent primarily to their clothing and, in small amounts, to exposed skin when necessary.

For more information on use of DEET during pregnancy, please see

  • Avoid anything with oxybenzone in it- this is a specific chemical that allows chemicals to absorb into your bloodstream- check lotions you use as well- Here's a link to a very helpful article. https://www.babymed.com/beauty-products/sunscreen-safety-and-your-pregnancy
