NY Moms-Vaccines for Newborns

Let me preface this by saying I am not looking to start an argument between anyone here. Being a first time mom, I am concerned about some of the vaccines that are normally given at birth to a newborn. I am wondering if anyone who has already had a baby has refused or delayed these vaccines and how it was handled by the hospital you were in. Living in NY, I know it is the state with the most strict laws. I'm looking for more information on how to find out what to do if I decide I want to refuse or delay certain vaccines for my child.

Re: NY Moms-Vaccines for Newborns

  • Which ones at birth are you talking about?
Hep B is the only one given at birth. We waited until her first doctors appointment at 4 days old for that since we had no risk factor.

Vitamin K is the other shot given to newborns. It's important to stop internal bleeding. You can't tell from looking at them if they need it. I would never skip this.

Antibiotic eye ointment is the other common practice at birth. We opted out of that because we had no risks. My midwife supported that one.

  • @Pontot31 Did you have to sign any type of forms ahead of time to hold off on the Hep B shot and the antibiotic eye ointment? I definitely do not want these done and I don't have any risk factor. I just want to be prepared ahead of time so no mistakes are made. I have read that vitamin K is very important but that it can be given orally rather than in shot form and is supposed to be safer for the baby.

No. Our pediatrician was there in the hospital and said waiting 4 days wasn't a big deal and was common. I'm in Michigan and not NY though.

I don't remember signing anything. The nurses all said it was normal.

The vit K shot is really nothing. My daughter didn't even notice. She nursed the whole time. The vaccines are very important and there's a small window to get them done in where the baby responds best. A LOT of research goes into that. They are safe.

Talk to the pediatrician ahead of time and your doctor and ask what's common.
  • Also if I had been group B strep positive... Which you won't know until later... I would have done the eye ointment. So you don't know for sure if you have a risk or not yet.
  • Oh okay-good to know. When do they usually test for that?

    3rd trimester sometime. It's just a swab.
  • Thanks for your help! I appreciate it!
  • I have been really worrying about vaccinations as well. I know that some are totally needed but do we need to pump our tiny babies full of dangerous medicine?! I started doing research and I found this alternate vaccine schedule that I like. It will be more doctors visits but I feel more comfortable with it. I'm going to be a sahm so I don't have to worry about daycare or anything like that. Here is the link. https://www.oprah.com/health/Dr-Sears-Alternative-and-CDCs-Childhood-Vaccine-Schedules

Oprah is not a reputable source for medical information, no matter how badly she wants to be. Speak to your Ob and/or a pediatrician about your concerns.
Did you go to the link? It's a pediatrician that came up with the alternate vaccination schedule. I'm not a moron and I hate Oprah but this schedule seem reasonable. Thank though.

I didn't on this one. I actively despise doctors that "sell out" to be on day time TV. If this pediatrician created the alternative schedule that's fantastic! But it's still a discussion with your individual doctor, not a one size fits all plan.

  • I agree that you have to talk to your doctor but you have to have a place to start. I would have gone in and took what they said and not questioned it. Yeah, the guy sold out and went on Oprah, but that doesn't mean what he has to say isn't valid. Just talking to your doctor isn't enough, you have to do research and be willing to stand up for the health of your child. No one else is going to do it.

I'm just going to drop this here in regards to Dr. Sears' alternative vax schedule. https://www.immunize.org/concerns/offit_moser2009.pdf

When we spoke to our midwife, she said that the Vitamin K shot is better than the oral because newborns may spit out the nasty-tasting oral and not get what they need. The oral also requires multiple doses. A quick needle prick is probably less upsetting than three or four doses of nasty oral medicine. Vitamin K deficiency hemorrhaging is a scary thing and very preventable with a very safe shot.

You may need to sign a form to opt out of the eye ointment. We are opting out as well since it is administered to mainly to prevent chlamydia and gonorrhea infections of the eu, which I have been tested for and have low/no risk of contracting. In some states, it is mandatory, so check with your doctor if you can refuse it, and if so, how you should do it.

This. Dr. Oz is also an actual doctor and when seriously questioned he doesn't even stand by the crap he sells on his show. If you're legitimately concerned call every pediatrician in your area and ask where they stand on the issue. You'd be surprised how many of them disagree with "doctors" that go on shows like Oprah. You're choosing a doctor to care for your child, talk to them and trust their opinion.
