The Dreaded Enema...

So, I am 39 wks and my water broke at 10:58 pm while laying in bed. We made it to the hospital around 12 am and found out I am indeed ruptured. 4th baby, first time I ruptured naturally. After all the typical paperwork, IV, etc., the nurse lays it on me. The doctor ordered an enema! Wait what!? I have delivered 3 children and have never had one...not to mention even when not pregnant. I have never had a mishap either. I also went before coming in. My body was cleaning itself out all day. So, I ended up going through with it. Torture! It was pure torture and embarrassing! Supposedly this is going to prevent a mishap. Actually, I feel quite the opposite.

Are any of you ladies planning on having one or refusing it if your doctor orders it?

I seriously regret it...glad I brought my own wipes :-S

Oh crap you already got it????
  • I'm not an expert, but my impression is that most hospitals have phased enemas out. Maybe you had a very old school doctor, but I don't think they're commonly used nowadays. There aren't really any advantages that I know of, and to be honest it's really not a big deal if you poop during labour.

    Also congratulations!

Yes :(( I was told that all but 1 doctor do them here and it is common when mom is in early labor. The nurse said when she has kids, she will even get it. It was odd to me also and I wish I hadn't gone through with it. My bowels are making noise now that I am on pitocin. I am getting a bolus so I can have my epidural before shift change.Once I have that epidural, no more bathroom trips. I am afraid I set myself up for "that embarrassing moment when you poop during birth". I am pretty dissatisfied at the moment. Not only did I have to wait in the waiting room when I got here for 20 mins because triage is busy tonight, but this is the 4th baby and still only a 3...not to mention that my cervix is posterior and both times I have been checked have been very painful. I almost need the epidural just to be checked. :((

My friend asked for one and was really happy that she did. I think she was super worried about pooping on the table for some reason. She told me I should get one...but I think I'll pass. ;-)
  • I've never heard of this before. Everybody poops. If it happens it happens. Childbirth is enough pain to deal with.

I kind of want one right now to get rid of the constipation but in labor I thought that was something from forever ago! I really don't like that the doctor didn't discuss it with you!

I'm sorry, @toodaloo. But seeing this while we are talking about poop just pressed my giggle button. Just, the wording with the context... I AM really sorry for giggling. That Dr sucks. Maybe you'll piss in his face as he's about to catch. That would be a fitting revenge.

  • That is crazy! Do you mind me asking where you are located (general area)
  • I feel violated for you!!! I hope the rest of your experience is better.
  • Oh my, I am sorry you went through that! I had to have one a few years ago but it wasn't related to labor , if I didn't NEED it I never would have gotten one and hope to never have one again. My first child two years ago I pooped and it was literally no big deal the nurse just took it away quickly and that was that . If my doctor wants me to have one this time I'll refuse n tell him he can deal with it.
  • No way! I'd be afraid of having watery poo during labor.
  • If my doctor tried to tell me I needed an enema before delivery I would tell him he has a better chance of getting one himself. What kind of ancient dinosaur doctor ordered an enema?

    God this enrages me.
  • I know it sounds crazy, but I dread getting an emema more than the actual birth process lol. I had to have an enema about 6 weeks ago and it was miserable, but I was so constipated. I was literally sitting on the toilet praying to God that it would just be over already lol. Hopefully they don't order me an enema. I work in icu at the hospital I will be delivering at, but what we do in icu and what they do in baby land are completely different worlds haha so I don't know what to expect. Hang in there X_X

I pray he doesn't give you a leather strap to bite on instead as your epidural. Sorry you have to go through it. But on the bright side you will meet your LO soon. Good luck! !!
Edit: my original seemed rude and not intended to be.
  • What?!?!? The body can do a great job of cleaning itself out, but poop happens. It is birth not a diner. It involves bodily fluids. I hope your birth goes well and that this is the end of the antiquated requests.
