Girl Name Zelda... Thoughts?

My SO recently decided to finally get involved in the 'naming baby' process- and popped out Zelda Mariel or Zelda Rose as the names he likes. His last name is long, complicated, and starts with 'R'. What do you ladies think? I'm trying to think of any horrid nicknames ahead of time, but I'm coming up with none.

Re: Girl Name Zelda... Thoughts?

  • I can't think of any horrible nicknames, but maybe it's my generation that does this to me: I can't stop thinking about the video game. Perhaps the kids that will be in the same age group as your daughter wouldn't have a clue about the video game, so it wouldn't be an issue. I feel like it's similar to naming a child Luigi, which is also a normal name but reminds me of the video game.

What made your SO think of Zelda? I feel like I've known a Zelda or two throughout coaching/teaching experiences, but it certainly isn't common which is nice. Your child wouldn't be one of 5 Zeldas in her class!

  • Probably the video game lol. He's quite a fan. We originally wanted to use Lily, but one of our friends named their daughter Lillow and are calling her Lily, so we're revisiting other name options. We may circle back to Lily just because we both love the name, but I asked him if he had any other names he liked, and to my shock (first time since we found out in February) he popped out with Zelda. :)

Actually one I suggested to my husband but he vetoed because of the association with the video game. I prefer Zelda Rose. It makes it sound a bit more feminine. Is the video game even still around? I don't know if kids in her generation would make the connection.

  • Love the name zelda
  • We like the name lincoln and would call babt link like from the same video game haha. I honestly think there are so many unique names in the upcoming generation of kids that making dun of people for tgeir names wont even be a thing thwy do anymorw. I love zelda rose!
  • I like Zelda Rose. And while the video gave does come to mind when I hear the name, it's a perfectly legitimate female name. I actually knew a Zelda once. Granted she was an older woman, but still.

My son is named Orion, because my husband really wanted to use that name. I agreed because it meets my criteria for an "acceptable" baby name: relatively easy to pronounce and spell, doesn't automatically lend itself to embarrassing nicknames, and isn't so unusual that it sounds made-up. Zelda would also meet said criteria. (BTW, what I deem "acceptable" is just my personal preference--not to judge anyone else!)

Bonus, Zelda would probably be the only one in her class amongst a sea of Charkottes!

I love your criteria for acceptable! It fits pretty neatly with mine - I'm not so worried about the easy to spell, as long as there is an easily spelled nickname that we would use. :)
    Also, love the name Orion!
  • Orion is on my short list! I like Zelda too.
  • Zelda Rose is an awesome name. If this baby had been a girl we would have gone with rose as a middle name. And as a former Nintendo junkie, Zelda is everything♡
  • Zelda is a beautiful name, and a great princess. I believe Robin Williams' daughter is named Zelda.

  • I love Zelda Mariel.

I'm another big fan of the Zelda series, like my engagement ring is Zelda themed, so I feel like it wouldn't be fair name a kid after my biggest fandom, but honestly I don't think anyone will comment outside of nerds who actually play Zelda, and we'll all be secretly jealous.

And if for some reason someone does get snooty about it, you can always fire back, "No, she's named for Zelda Fitzgerald* who was a pop-culture icon of the 20's."

*Also where Miyamoto came up with the name Zelda.
  •      I prefer Zelda Mariel, although I am a huge fan of the name Rose.

Zelda is the name of the sister in Pet Sematary. But I wouldn't think about that if I were you.

I think Zelda is a superb name. I have a friend named Zelda and she is beautiful, super sweet and feminine. So that is what I think of when I think of Zelda.

I love the name Zelda! Dont see anything wrong with naming your child after a gorgeous yet powerful princess either :) Big fan of the games myself, pretty much grew up with them. I dont think itd be weird at all, its a beautiful name that definitely isnt overused.

  • I love the name Zelda!! I started to love it after watching a sitcom last fall that the main character was Zelda (A to Z, which was a cute show, but got cancelled already.)

Zelda=video game girl..i dont care for it
  • Not a fan in the least.... It seems to me that it would (kinda) work as a kid but once she reaches adulthood it will haunt her....

I think it's a great name! Kids won't know what that video game is.. It's very different..

How many kids will be named Ava, Olivia, Charlotte, Sophia in school with her. She will have the cooler name

And who doesn't want to be named after a princess!

I think it's a cool name. If you like it, go for it.
Some PPs said something like "Oh, kids won't know the video games." I just want to point out that there are still new Zelda games coming out. I think they just released a new one for the 3DS. And she's featured on other games, such as Super Smash Brothers. Kids will be able to make the connections. Especially kids with video game parents.
While I do think of Princess Zelda when I hear the name, I also think of Aunt Zelda from Sabrina the Teenaged Witch, and I love it! Aunt Zelda was so level headed and smart. :)

I prefer Zelda Rose. Rose is such a delicate sounding name.
    Good luck!

I thought the same two references!!!
  • Zelda is a super cool name, that's author F. Scott Fitzgerald's wife's name.
  • I do not like if but it's not my baby. I would maybe get use to it if I knew the particular child that had this name.

I love it. I guess I'm snooty because I don't know anything about Zelda being used in video games, but I immediately think of Zelda Fitzgerald, the Jazz Age icon. If you're trying to get an image in your head for the name Zelda, I would do a little research on her. She was a formidable woman in her own right and just the height of Southern American meets European glamour. A very tragically romantic figure, while also a force to be reckoned with. That's what I look for in girl names ;)
