Surgery while pregnant

I am 13 weeks 3 days pregnant now. I will be 14 weeks 3 days pregnant when I go in to have a mass removed. The doctors (the many I've seen and the many that have been counseled by those doctors) cannot decide what the mass is or where it is coming from. My OB specialist thinks it may be an ovarian cyst. It is 11 cm as of my last ultrasound. Has anyone else had surgery or has to have surgery? None of the doctors are really talking to me about what to expect for recovery. I'm scared and anxious beyond imagine, but trying to keep my head straight and not be too stressed.

  • I don't have any advice, but I'm sending positive thoughts your way.  Good luck and lots of hope for a speedy recovery.

  • Thank you!
  • No advice either sorry but wishing you all the best! X
  • No advice either but lots of positive thoughts and vides your way.
  • If they are going in laproscopically expect tenderness at the incision sites and gas pain particularly in the shoulders area. My mom had laproscopic gall bladder removal a few year ago and she said walking/moving will help disburse the gas and farting. She said she had more pain from the gas than the incision sites. T&Ps it is quick and your recovery is easy.

Good luck. Definitely follow the doctors advice on your recovery. If laparoscopic, as mentioned previously, walking is recommended (but take it slow). Also do your breathing exercises to avoid pneumonia. They will give you a device to blow into at certain time intervals.

Lastly, if provided medication, take it per the doctors instructions. I know many of us don't like to take medication when pregnant, but this will help your recovery and will be best for you in the long run. Also stay hydrated and eat small, bland meals if the anesthesia is bothering you. If you like eggs, they are great when recovering as they have lots of protein and nutrients.

    Lurking from December 15.
I had heart surgery a week and a half ago (I'm 9 weeks 4 days today) and I was super nervous about it because they said until 12 weeks I had a 50/50 shot of miscsrriage from the stress of the surgery, but it was more dangerous for both me and baby to wait a month than to go ahead and do it. Since your surgery is different than mine I'm not 100% sure but if you're 13 weeks I would say not to be too nervous! My surgery went fine and they had an OB in the OR with me the whole time. The recovery was a little rough because there's not much they'd give me pain wise while pregnant (there are a few that are safe but I've had bad reactions to them while not pregnant so the doctor didn't want to take his chances). Got the surgery Friday and had an ultrasound the following Monday and baby was doing perfect :)

The only part that I really wish I could have done without was because of the pregnancy they gave me local anesthesia when normally they would do a general anesthesia for the surgery I had so I was awake through the whole thing...I could hear the doctors and nurses doing everything even though I couldn't feel a thing so that was creepy, but not sure which they're doing with you.

Good luck with your surgery and I hope I helped calm some of your nerves. A great doctor will always weigh the cost of the procedure with the risk so if you trust your doctor you should be confident they wouldn't be doing the surgery if it weren't absolutely necessary!

ETA: Mine was not laproscropic, I had an actual chest incision so not sure how that changes things!
  • I had my gallbladder out years ago, not while pregnant. A friend of mine had her out while pregnant, and it seemed about the same. She just had a few more incisions than I, laparoscopicly, as not to disturb the baby. As long as they're not actually interfering with the baby/sac, you should be perfectly fine. Otherwise they'll tell you the risks. It won't be terrible, you'll just be extra sore for a while :)
Baby number 1 on the way!

    Thank you everyone!
  • Thank you mamagagail! It does help. I will be having general anesthesia. The doctors say I can't have the normal sedatives they give you to calm down before they put you to sleep because of the risks of birth defects are too great. Also no anti-nausea meds for the same reason. I am glad you pulled through and baby did too! I hope recovery is going and continues to progress well for you.

Thank you everyone for the thoughts and prayers! It means a lot to me.

I think it is strange they aren't planning on checking on me for 2 weeks after surgery, especially since it is outpatient. I wish I were able to have an ultrasound or really any kind of check-up on baby soon after.
