Let me preface this by saying I am not looking to start an argument between anyone here. Being a first time mom, I am concerned about some of the vaccines that are normally given at birth to a newborn. I am wondering if anyone who has already had a baby has refused or delayed these vaccines and how it was handled by the hospital you were in. Living in NY, I know it is the state with the most strict laws. I'm looking for more information on how to find out what to do if I decide I want to refuse or delay certain vaccines for my child.
Re: NY Moms-Vaccines for Newborns
Hep B is the only one given at birth. We waited until her first doctors appointment at 4 days old for that since we had no risk factor.
Vitamin K is the other shot given to newborns. It's important to stop internal bleeding. You can't tell from looking at them if they need it. I would never skip this.
Antibiotic eye ointment is the other common practice at birth. We opted out of that because we had no risks. My midwife supported that one.
I don't remember signing anything. The nurses all said it was normal.
The vit K shot is really nothing. My daughter didn't even notice. She nursed the whole time. The vaccines are very important and there's a small window to get them done in where the baby responds best. A LOT of research goes into that. They are safe.
Talk to the pediatrician ahead of time and your doctor and ask what's common.
You may need to sign a form to opt out of the eye ointment. We are opting out as well since it is administered to mainly to prevent chlamydia and gonorrhea infections of the eu, which I have been tested for and have low/no risk of contracting. In some states, it is mandatory, so check with your doctor if you can refuse it, and if so, how you should do it.
