I posted this on my city board but it's DOA. Hoping someone here has some experience. Has anyone used either for their newborn photos? I don't want to spend a small fortune on photos.
I worked at sears portrait a few years ago. They are not that experienced trust me. plus all the ones out here got closed. They have strict rules on what you can do with poses which isn't much. A lot of photographers have deals and they usually aren't that much more than the "deals" at studio. 100-200 on either and a private is 100x better. Check out local photographers on fb near you. Lots of times they post deals and mini sessions at discount rates
Agree completely with the pp. Maybe even call a local college and contact someone in their art department to ask if anyone in their photography classes might be interested.
Where I live your are incredibly lucky if you can find a newborn photographer for less than $300 and that doesn't include any prints or images. I have taken my kids to JC penny's photo studio before and I was satisfied with the pictures we got. Sure they would have been better with a professional photographer, but we couldn't afford a few hundred dollars every couple of months for just a couple of prints.
The youngest I took my kids was 3 months, but my sister in law got a couple of cute shots of my niece when she was just a couple of weeks old.
My cousin worked at the JC Penny photography studio for a while and let's just say I wouldn't want her taking my newborn's pictures lol I would really search the local area for a professional, some the are not quite as establish are a little cheaper and you can save money if you do a package like newborn +2 or 3 session the first year.
I feel like it is an investment worth making they are only little once
I would say it is really hit or miss. I took DS to JC Penney for 1 month and 3 month pictures ( we had a Groupon for both so it was super cheap). His 1 month pictures were ok not great. The 3 month pictures were all horrible, except one which is one of the best pictures we ever got of him. Below are a few examples white onsie is the 1 month shots and 3 months is the hoodie. We did one year photos at target and they were all horrible, we did not save any of them.
Penny's did an OK job with DD I took her there for 1 mo, 3mo 6 mo, 9mo, 1 year, 18mo, and 2 year as far as expenses go it's all I could afford they did OK.
I am on a lot of community Facebook groups and photographers run specials on those a lot. I actually found someone who is working on a portfolio to do my maternity and newborn photos for a great deal. I think a big difference is lighting inside Penny's and those places is artificial and that doesn't work well with photography. And I am assuming the session is much shorter, less props and such. Good luck picking something.
Keep in mind many photographers offer payment plans. If you could pay a little each month it would be well worth the investment to go with a professional photographer
As a photographer, our prices are 100% negotiable. It all depends on the time we're spending. I'd charge a mama less if I just rolled up to her house, snapped photos, and sent her a couple images the next day. Time is money so keep it simple. Also, a lot of photogs who do wedding/engagement might be flexible for the sake of expanding his or her portfolio.
A while back I also worked at Sears. Like @gapeach83 said we were restricted to a number of poses and snaps and we're booked really tight sometimes. If you want a better shot at cute pictures hire someone who can come to your house.
Another thought, if you have any friends who consistently post great pictures of themselves and their family on facebook or instagram ask them to stop by and take some pictures. They'd probably be willing to do it for either little money or maybe a barter of some baby sitting time or a great meal one night.
Right now shutterfly is giving u 101 free prints for Memorial Day if u use the code MEMORIALDAY it ends tonight though and u only pay shipping which is $8 and ends up being only .12 per photo
I would not waste my time at Sears or somewhere like that for newborn pics. As a photographer myself newborn pics are a one time shot and I would want someone who really knows what they're doing. Sears and photographers who are just starting and building their portfolio are probably not going to get much better pics than you or a friend could take yourselves. That's just my opinion though. Newborns are not my speciality but I'm going to try to do mine myself. We might hire a photographer though to get some of all three of us. I've ordered these little pants and can't wait to shoot my little man in them. Hoping for a pic like this. Also check around with local photographers. A lot of them have a special for the first year. Usually called watch me grow or something like that where you pay a one time fee and get newborn pics and then pics at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months.
I have had great luck at JC penny! I have been going there for almost 5 years for quick shots. I got a groupon to and if you sign up for their membership thing (it was free when I did it)
