parenting book for FTMs?

Hey, just wondering if anyone has a good parenting book recommendation for us FTMs. I'm just looking for something that provides a guideline for when to introduce different types of foods and when to watch for certain milestones etc. I've heard that your pediatrician will provide sheets with this info but I like to read ahead and would like to have a book to reference. Thanks!

Re: parenting book for FTMs?

  • A friend bought me the Mayo Clinic's Guide to Your Baby's First Year.   It was helpful.

  • Loading the player...
  • What to expect: the first year

I second this. With my DD, my doc recommended that I choose one book and not read a bunch of different ones as he said it would make me crazy.
:)) we used this book and found it very helpful and pretty darn accurate for how/when our little one progressed.
  • 3rd on What to Expect, the First Year. East to read, Very helpful and organized nicely.
  • My pediatrician actually recommended me not to get the expecting first year book. He told me to get Caring for Your Baby and Young Child, 6th Edition: Birth to Age 5 by American Academy Of Pediatrics and the Babywise books.

You need to get "how not to be a perfect mother", it has a lot of REAL helpful tips, but is also fun to read.
  • Did he say why? Just curious, since it's the one I've been reading!
  • First time parents - the guide to coping brilliantly.
I bought this very early on and I've read and re read it, it is exactly what it says it is, its honest, it doesn't butter things up which makes things reassuring
I think it's a god send because I have never been around young baby's before and this will be my first experience, it doesn't feel like I'm going to fail as soon as my baby is here

I guess everyone has their own thoughts on it. It was super helpful for us as we navigated DD and I'm planning on using it for reference for our new little one.

  • What to expect the first year as PP's stated and I believe I also purchased Your Baby's First Year Week by Week. That was nearly a decade ago.
  • I asked him why he didn't care for it, and he just said many of the items it talked about just caused parents worry/concern for no reason.  Not sure if there are horror stories in there or what?  I haven't read it so I'm not sure.  It just seemed his personal preference and we liked him because his approach to parenting matched with ours - kind of a moderate balance between laid back and overly concerned but not too much in one direction.

For pregnancy, my OB recommended the Mayo Clinic guide instead of What to Expect, because she said WTE makes a lot of women worry unnecessarily about really rare complications. For my personality, that was great advice, so I think it depends on what kind of worrier you are. I imagine the baby books are similar.
  • Yes I am a worrier by nature so another reason. Haha
