SO OVER (rant)

People telling me "My kids slept with bumper pads, pillows, blankets and whatever in their crib. They also slept on their stomach." I understand that times were different when we were all babies. I also live in a county where the infant mortality rate is considerably higher than the national average. I work at a pregnancy center where we teach safe sleep over and OVER again because our infant mortality rate is SO high. I always just say well we are just choosing differently for our child based on the studies I have seen at my work. I don't really know what else to say. Why are people so upset that I don't want pillows or heavy blankets in the crib?! It drives me crazy!!!

I don't know! It comes up all the time! They say my baby will be cold and they they will choke on their back.. I feel like I'm constantly defending myself. I don't want my child to be cold or choke(which I know isn't true), just want them to have a safe sleep environment. Based in the training I've had, I made my choice.

I thought babies usually slept on their backs? Is that now incorrect? FTM can't ya tell? :D
  • I know because I'm a new parent, people are going to try and tell me what to do, and I'm sure I'll have a lot of questions and need help. I know they mean well, but I've had extensive training on this specific subject. When people keep saying this to me it makes me want to scream :((

Yes! Always put baby "back to sleep". Once they start rolling to their stomachs on their own you're good. Just make sure their hands are free at that point and they've had lots of tummy time practice.
Ok that's what I thought, thank you.
  • Yes always sleep on the back! When I was little they said sleep on the stomach, I think that's why everyone is hounding me about it.
  • That's a great way to remember "back to sleep" @MadBloom
  • Great advice, thank you @kmkrushi
  • Something my doctor told me later though was that I could roll up a recieving blanket (tight) and put it under baby's back so they can sleep on their side a little she was wearing her hair off in the back lol the doctor said she doesn't have to only sleep on her back since she seems to want to be on a side with all the failed attempts to roll ;)

My first had to wear a therapy helmet because the back of his head was so flat. I'll be super cautious to avoid that with this baby.

I can't take credit, it's embroidered on one of my daughters sleep sacks! It was a great reminder to read it every time I laid her down.

  • Both my daughters slept on their backs and it was just fine. Put them in jumpers when it was chilly too. People love to stick their noses into your pregnnacy though.

From the moment I held you in my arms, I knew it was meant to be.

    I adore her smile,
    I cherish her hugs,
    I admire her heart.
    But most of all,
I love that she is my daughter.

  • I have been reading on and considering the blanket debate. My mom text to ask if we have a bedding set yet, so In told her what I have been reading. Although she said nothing more, I think I saw a bumper and set in her back seat the last time we got together...
  • To save myself time and effort I look at who the "advise" is coming from, if it is someone that will be involved in my LO life I explain my choices. If is it some random person, like a coworker, I just thank them and say something like "I will remember that" then do ahead with my orginal plan.

  • Something I've found to appease the grandparents is putting the bumper on the outside of the crib.

  • Why not just wait and put the bedding in when the child is older? That's my plan unless there's something wrong with that? (FTM)

The bumper can be used by an older baby to climb out of the crib.  I tried that and my daughter at 7 months managed to pull herself up on the crib and using the bumper managed to tip herself out of the crib.  She was fine, but I would say the first time your child can pull up on anything lower the crib and never keep the bumpers on the inside.

*Actually just don't use the darn things.  After thinking about it for a minute she could have used it to step up if it was on the outside as well.

  • "Back to sleep, tummy to play" is what my Occupational Therapist said! We had a similar problem to @Iwentland with needing to attend the head shape clinic. The right side of my sons forehead was pushing forward because of too much laying on his right back/side of his head. Thankfully we didn't need a helmet quite yet and with lots of tummy time and keeping him of that spot of his head (turn his neck after asleep, BFing in certain positions, lots of fun!), his head is now normal. Sooooo long story short, make sure your babes get tons of tummy time from the start!!
  • Wearable blankets, or sleep sacks, are great options for colder weather. That's what we used for DS. He never liked the swaddling variety but did well with the kind where his arms are out and only legs are enclosed (we used Halo).
  • I'd just not even bother telling people my plans. Why do they need to know? Sounds like they only want to know so they can tell you how "wrong" you are.

  • So annoying its your choice not theirs
  • Baby sleeping bags (sleep sacks, whatever you want to call them) are brilliant. Kiddo1.0 vehemently hated being swaddled right from the get go, and kicked his blanket off every.damn.time. Sleeping bags were a complete sanity saver for me. Plus if you get the ones that zip all around the edge you don't even need to take them off to change stinky diapers at 2am...bonus.
  • We love the sleep sac idea! We will definitely have a few
  • I've been searching for them online for not many moneys, and it looks like IKEA have a good selection for not many $ @ShianeNicole
