Re: Advice Please, Labor

  • It's definitely what you prefer. If it's important to you that you dont take pain medication, then water birth may be a good option. But if you have low pain tolerance and just don't want to feel everything going on then an epidural is good.
This is my second pregnancy. I had an epidural with my first, but it wore off by the time I was giving birth so I felt about 50% of the pain. I'm planning on not getting an epidural with my second because I felt like I was very capable of getting through the pain without it.

Id go with your gut instincts on this one. Whatever sounds slightly better to you, go for it.

  • Totally a personal choice. There's been a lot of discussion on birth plans, so I would try using the search bar to bring up some of those posts so you can see some personal experiences from other moms on what they did, liked, and disliked.

  • If both are available options where you are delivering, you can always start with water and if it isn't comforting for you ask for the epidural.
  • I'm all about the pain meds. Epidural for our 5th kid ALL THE WAY. Our epidurals here don't run out. They have a timer set to make sure of that. I prefer not to feel pain during, as I will be feeling it and exhaustion after anyway.
  • I received an epidural with my first. However, they turned it off once it came time to push (that sucked) BUT without it, I wouldn't have been able to relax in order to fully dilate. It's definitely up to you though. I plan to get an epidural again with this one and hopefully this time they won't turn it off on me :)

  • make sure you check out your hospital too and what their rules are. For example, our hospital will not let us birth in the tub... so facts like that might change your preference.

  • If I had to choose, I would choose the tub. I didn't use either with my first, but I had a fairly quick labor/delivery. My hospital won't allow you to deliver in the tub, just labor in it.
It's really a complete personal preference. I would try out both to see which you prefer. I don't think it really matters whether it's your first or your fifth pregnancy. Some people like the epidural, some like the tub.
  • Never been in a hospital that has tubs so I've always gone the epidural route. This time I'll be trying to avoid all of it as with #2 the epidural only worked on my toes so wasn't any real relief anyway.

  • My advice is come with an open mind and prepare as best you can for any scenario.  An epidural or a med-free birth are guaranteed to no one.   You might arrive too late for an epi or it might not work.  Best to have natural forms of pain relief, counter pressure, breathing, water, birthing ball, etc.  You might be too tense or tired to effectively deal with labor and an epi may be your best choice, so learn about that too.

That being said, I've always been a 'less is more' kind of person and so a med-free birth always made sense for me.  I had both of mine med-free and hope to do that again with this one.  If it doesn't work out it doesn't, too much is beyond our control, but I am preparing for it while acknowledging that plans may change.
  • :) Hi all~~ thank all for the information and advice..
I think I will just wait and see.... go natural ,if I really can't the pain... for sure epidural.
I'm just too worry about the pain tho~~~ ;(
Maybe second child try water birth! Haha..
    Thank everyone reply my post!!
  • @chantellbroussard wow.. 5 kids? Epidural I heard that have side effect right??
  • @vivianhsia  Yep. 5. They are ages 12, 9, 6, 4, and the one due in July. I had an epidural every time. I haven't had any negative side effects. My children were all perfectly healthy,  they had no side effects from the epidural either. I have no desire to be in pain while delivering the baby. There are enough crappy things that you go through after birth (i.e. contractions of your uterus when it is going down, bleeding, lethargy, etc) without suffering through pain of a who knows how long delivery too. I was offered a partial epidural for my 3rd and I LOVED it. I was up within an hour of birthing him and was cleaning the room up.
