Infant CPR

Is infant CPR class worth it to take? Any experiences from other mamas out there? We signed up to take it then decided not to but may sign up again! I'm a teacher and have taken multiple cpr classes in the past.. It seems like they keep changing things every few years so I'm not sure if the class would be worth our time or money. Thanks!

Definitely worth it! Not a whole lot has changed, but it is always good to have a refresher. Put it this way if you are on the edge, God forbid something happened, could you forgive yourself if you chose NOT to take the class and you forgot what to do? If you are on the fence, do it!! Knowledge is power.

  • It was free through our fire department. Very common. DH and I found it helpful and gives us a sense of comfort knowing what to do.
  • Heaven forbid you walk in and your baby is blue. Do you know how to start CPR on your child before the paramedics get there? If you have a confident yes then you don't need the class. If you are even slightly unsure then it shouldn't be a question.

  • If you pay for homeowners insurance every year but your house never burns down or floods then it wasn't "Worth it" to pay all that money. But would you really want to take that risk?

I see infant CPR like that but soooo much more important!

That makes sense. I just figure since I've taken child cpr recently and have done research on reputable websites that I am pretty educated. Also, NO ONE I know around here took it so I was wondering if other moms out there have!
  • I've booked my husband and I in even though he's ex-Army and I'm an ex Flight Attendant - we are trained, but not in infants specifically.
I couldn't not do it. If something did happen I just.. Yeah I can't even imagine. Even knowing adult and general infant first aid, it's not the same.. Especially when it's your baby. You'll lose your mind no matter how cool calm and collected you try to be. The moments before the paramedics get to you are crucial so any training you can fall back on will help you go into autopilot in an emergency.
  • I'm taking one that is for adult/child/infant. It's 2 hours of my life and could save another's.
  • We get certified every year where I work and have to prove it on competency day at the hospital where I work even though I only have adults. But I still made my husband take the class because what if I wasn't home? I would never forgive myself

I'm a certified CPR/First Aid instructor. I do not work in the medical field, but I have had to use the skills numerous times - at work, coming upon accidents that have just happened (I seem to be a magnet for doing this) before rescue arrives....you just never know when you may be able to save someone's life or at least have an impact on it. I keep a first aid kit in my car and I have a CPR mask on my keychain. I am very passionate about everyone knowing how to do CPR and First Aid. Not even just CPR, but do you know what to do if your baby starts choking when you start to introduce solid foods, or if they find something small and put it in their mouth? You will never regret taking the class, you could regret it for the rest of your life if you don't.
  • Since motherhood, 15 months ago, I've seen atleast 5 real infant choking scenarios happen (some mine, some not) that we had to do the infant choking scenario. Great advice

  • Where do you find an infant CPR class to take? From what I saw online, Red Cross only offers adult CPR and the YMCA isn't offering another one until January.

Sorry.. I'm in Australia so I'm no help. There's one here that's independently run by a specialist company called Tiny Hearts First Aid, also our 'St Johns First Aid' (like Red Cross) who run Adult First Aid across the country also run a Infant/Child specific course for parents.
Hopefully you find a company who is certified to run the infant specific course for you where you live.. Other posters might have to help out with more information though..
  • I am a doctor and I am taking it.

My husband and I took it tonight! We took the class so we are certified for adult as well. It's definitely worth it! Even though I've had it before, I wanted my certification to be current through the first years of baby's life. I feel so much more comfortable now! Plus, we met some great people who live near us!

I'm certified, (under the medical professional specific courses) have been for many years. My husband is also certified. My mother is a volunteer firefighter and is first aid and CPR certified. Our hospital offers the infant specific first aid and CPR course free of charge and we are all taking the course.

The only person I'm not requesting take the course is my step dad who's a police officer and who was recertified in 2015. And has been for more than 20 years. Anyone else wanting to watch my child, including my siblings will be requested to take it. Even if say we're at a peak or birthday party and someone else's child needs first aid or CPR, I want to be ready, calm, and to give all the help I can. I'd say, yes, of all the classes to take, that one is incredibly important, relevant, and worth every minute and dime.

@carleyec93 check if your hospital offers it as one of their classes....many do. Otherwise you can check this site: https://www.nsc.org/learn/Safety-Training/Pages/safety-training.aspx
  • @Miz_Liz Thank you! Turns out the hospital I'm delivering at doesn't have one, but the one right by my house does. All registered! :D

I think it is a no brainer. I could never forgive myself for not educating myself on it if I needed it someday and hadn't bothered. My class was $40 for 3 people... Took my husband and my dad. My mom is cpr certified already or she would have come too.

My hospital offers a CPR training course for $20 but you are not certified. I thought it was odd that you don't get certified. Is it like that for anybody else?

    That is very strange....
  • I am infant/child/adult CPR and first aid and fire safety certified. I took the class through my job (Pre-K teacher). If I didn't have it, I'd still take it. It's just not worth the risk. Anyone who isn't sure should just do it.

That is so bizarre to me. I would call and ask why. At the end of the day, knowing the skill is the most important part, but when I teach the class I always certify everyone.

That's basically what our description says.
  • @Miz_Liz Yeah, I'm definitely going to give them a call tomorrow. I'm still going to go to the class to get the information, but they ought to have a good reason for not giving a certification! :-w

The only thing I can think of is maybe they are being cheap and don't want to provide everyone with their own books and such to take home? I know for me, I legally have to provide each participate with their own packet that includes a book, first aid guide, and a DVD with all of the content we cover, and I am not allowed to make photo copies to pass out to save $$. Of course, that may just be the legal requirements of the group I am certified through, but I had to sign off on it.
