Baby Names

Feeling name spelling regret...

I had my wonderful baby girl six weeks ago and named her Zoe. My whole pregnancy I was debating between the spelling of Zoe or Zoey. I decided to go without the y because it is the traditional spelling. Now everytime I write her name I have this feeling deep down that her name should have a y. My hubby is sick of hearing me worry about it and I am sick of this feeling of doubt. It upset me right away when she was born we told some people her name through text and some people thought it was pronounced like Joe. I think it looks prettier with a y. Agh I just need to get over it! I guess I just needed to vent. Has anyone felt name regret?

Re: Feeling name spelling regret...

  • If it helps, I've taught and coached a Zoe and neither had y's on their names. I think it looks funny with the y. Just my humble opinion! Lol

  • No name regret, but just wanted to say I prefer Zoe. The y feels unnecessary. FWIW.

I have to say I am surprised anyone thought that. It would get under my skin, too!
  • I personally really like Zoe spelled that way, and most Zoe's I've known have spelled it this way. Honestly, I cant imagine someone thinking it's pronounced like Joe. That seems very ignorant.
I think you made a good choice.
  • I think you made the right choice. Adding a y seems redundant.

  • No name regret, but Zoey looks weird to me. I much prefer Zoe.

Zoe was a good choice. Zoey looks weird and made up.

  • I also much prefer Zoe without the y. I don't think it looks nicer or more feminine that what.

  • First of all @Nacho521 I need to tell you that I love your avatar. Please note that my handle is Pam's favorite flavor of yogurt. (Well, that's mixed berry not berries but it worked better this way.)

Second, Zoe is perfectly fine and is how I would have spelled it. Zoey reminds me of Zooey Deschanel...and I find her to be insufferable. Take some comfort in the fact that we all seem to be in agreement on this!

  • Thank you all so much! I am just a worrier and I know if I would have chosen Zoey I would be feeling name regret of adding the y! And to clarify I meant that it was being pronounced like Joe, as in Zo.
  • @MixedBerries88 thank you! I am a big fan of the office! What a creative handle!
  • I think it was probably only one person who mispronounced the name.
  • I prefer Zoe so much more.

You explained it just fine, I totally understood you! My comment was meant to express the same sentiment as @erinnlou that a person who thinks "Zo" is just ignorant of the name (or maybe just straight up ignorant?). You definitely made the right choice!
  • Zoe is so much better without the Y

    Ditto
  • I like Zoe but you can change her name till age 1 without any legal issues if you want.
  • I have a Zoey and sometimes wonder if I should have spelt it without the y but we had our reasons for spelling it that way. I think it is a lovely name regardless of the spelling. Zooey on the other hand I used to pronounce Zoo -ey ha

  • I am chiming in to agree with everyone.  I like it better without the "y," that is the correct spelling, and if anyone pronounces it "Zo" they are the ones who look silly.
  • Zoey reminds me of Zooey Deschanel...and I find her to be insufferable
It is reassuring to know that I'm not alone in this.

  • Also prefer it (by a long shot) spelled Zoe.
  • I also prefer the spelling Zoe. I feel like the spelling Zoey looks more juvenile, and the "let's add a 'y' to every name to make it look cool.." has run its course.

    ^^ That.

Also.. why not just add an accent and spell it French style? Zoé. It changes the pronunciation however (Zo-ay and not Zoee) I only learned recently that it can be pronounced Zo-ee haha. I have always said "Zo-ay" as one of my childhood bffs was a "zo-ay" pronunciation.

Anyway, an acute accent gives you that extra something.

I agree with the entire troupe here. Zoe is the much more dignified choice.

Zoe > Zoey. You'll be fine.
  • Zoe is so much better than Zoey
  • I'm a worrier too, I'm so Afriad that when I pick a name I will regret it or of I don't pick that name I will regrets not picking it ! Your feelings are normal, going with the traditional spelling was a safe bet :)
