Baby Clothes Storage

What's the best solution you have found for folding/hanging/storing baby clothes? We have a fairly large closet in the nursery so I was hoping to use that for hanging the bulk of clothing, plus the use of baskets for socks, pants, shoes, etc. We also have a 3 drawer dresser/changing table so I was planning on using the top drawer of that for our cloth diapers/diaper covers. Second and third drawers could be used for folded clothes.

What's the most efficient solution you have found? What clothes are better hung versus folded? What clothes should be within arms reach of the changing table? Similarly, do you have an efficient organization technique for storing the too-small and too-large clothes after/before they are needed?

In my dresser/ changing table I have diapers, pajamas, and basic onsies folded. I have baskets on the wall for socks, and hats and I'm only hanging the cute dresses, and jackets. Our closet is small so I utilized the dresser.
We got a ton of hand me downs so I put all the bigger clothes in a basket in the closet. And I have an empty drawer for to small stuff when it's full I'll hand it down.

  • Other than special outfits, Christmas/Easter we fold down all our children's clothes.  We also CD, but keep that stuff on top of the changing table.  First drawer is PJs, undershirts, socks.  Second drawer pants and shirts.  Third drawer blankets, coats, hats, fitted sheets.

For too small clothes, that I put in a bin mark it ('0-3 month boy' for example) and put it in the basement.  For clothes that is too big we store it in under bed bins under the crib.
  • Interested in seeing the responses to this thread! I've been trying to figure out a system for organizing the nursery, but I'm stuck. I've effectively refolded the same pile of sleepers about six times, and that's as far as I got.

  • What I did because I have so many various sizes now inherited from friends and family is get a bunch of plastic bins and label them by size, 3-6, 6-9, 9, 12 24 months etc and then separate out all the clothes by month to store. I put all the newborn, 0-3 and 3 month sizes folded in the dresser with some burp clothes and swaddles in the top drawer. When she outgrows the 0-3 and 3 months size, I will switch out the whole dresser for the next size up and store the newborn clothes.

I haven't had to hang anything yet. I think hanging would be best for fancy outfits, coats or dresses. The rest can just be folded up.

I put socks in a separate drawer and really thick sweaters and sleepers in a separate drawer.

I hope that helps! It took me awhile to sort it all out but I think I got it set up now! Good luck!

I basically do this. I keep only what fits in drawers then periodically clean it out and replace with the next size up.

  • For moms who fold their baby clothes versus hang them - is that a closet space issue or do you find it easier to access?
  • we're folding and have clothes sorted by size. Right now the only things within reach are NB and 0-3mo. Baby hasn't gotten any outfits I'd consider hang-worthy :). For me, I just don't want to leave baby on the changing table to go to the closet- it just makes sense to have all that stuff within reach?

  • I fold because it's a small closet issue and its convenient to have jammies and basics near the changing table. I would fold jammies and onsies in the dresser even if the closet were bigger.
  • I was just on Pinterest and found a link which linked to another link which landed me on this blog! These posts are fantastic, and I plan to study up on the ways this woman organized so I can copy her.

  • I have zero patience for fold laundry so I hang absolutely everything except basic onesies, pjs and pants. Closet space isn't a issue though.
  • We have a walk in closet in the nursery but I'm still folding. With DD we were in a smaller house so we had to fold but it was super convenient to not have to walk over to the closet and either bring baby or belt her into the changing pad. We are the same as PP, we have 0-3 in the dresser and the rest sorted by size in storage totes in the closet. We are having our second girl so we have lots of hand me downs to work with.
