What type of bottles

Omg there are so many different type of bottles on the market.  I don't know where to start.  I'll be breast feeding exclusively until its time to go back to work.  Any suggestions on good brands to start with?

Re: What type of bottles

  • Everyone has their favorites.  I bought every bottle on the market when it was time for me to go back to work last time.  The only ones my daughter would take were the Playtex Drop ins with the soft rubber nipples.

  • My daughter would drink from anything as long as there was milk in it!

Squeeze a drop of milk out so baby can taste it, and then shove the nipple in their mouth so they get a good latch. Most of the bottle problems I've seen are when the parent/grandparent isn't shoving the nipple in far enough.

Hmmm, I don't think this was our problem.  I definitely shoved those things in there, but she was not interested.  She had a much easier time with the softer Playtex nipples.  I think it will be different for different kids and there isn't much knowing until the baby gets here.  I will be giving #2 a bottle here and there much earlier than I did with #1.  I think part of my problem was waiting too long.

  • Another fan of the Playtex bottles. In the early months I used the drop ins because of the easy clean up and less parts to clean. After about 3 months we transitioned to the Playtex VentAire. The bottles used the same nipples, so an inexpensive transition.

Ohh, I didn't know that was thing.  I will be looking for those this time.

  • Born free or Dr. Brown are great bottles to reduce gas or any tummy issue.
  • I used Avent for DS and will use them again for DD when she gets here.
  • I loved the Tommee Tippee bottles.  We didn't have any issues with our daughter switching back and forth from breast-to-bottle, I think part of it was because we introduced the bottle early on even though I was breastfeeding.  Or maybe we just got lucky!  I'm going to go with the Tommee bottles again unless for some reason this little one isn't a fan.
  • My first daughter would not take a bottle. I tried everything. I physically left the house when I knew she would be hungry. My husband tried 8 different bottle brands. She finally ended up taking the playtex bottle, but she would only take the latex nipple, not the silicone. I dreaded giving my second daughter a bottle but she took the medela bottle like a champ. Each kid is definitely different.
  • I would buy 1 of a few different brands to see which one the baby prefers. That way you don't waste a ton of money on bottles that the baby refuses. My little guy wasn't picky and went back and forth between 3-4 brands.

Also, unless you LO has reflux or gas issues, I'd skip the Dr Browns- they have a lot of extra parts that need cleaning. I had a friend that used them with her first and then tossed them for her second- too many parts meant too much time/effort to clean.
  • @buckleyk great tip! I heard to get just one of a few different styles. Question do you also need different nipples too- fast flow, slow flow etc? Or just different bottles and go from there?
  • If you're going to BF and pump, you only want a slowest flow nipple. When you tip the bottle over, nothing should drop out. Babies need to suck harder to get milk from breast than they do a bottle so a slow flow nipple will mimic that.

Also breast milk changes over time and becomes more fatty over time. So unlike formula (which is a fixed calorie amount), breastfed babies usually don't necessarily need to increase the amount of ounces to get the amount of fat/ calories they need. My son only ever took 6-6.5 ounces. So you don't need huge bottles.

Kellymom.com has LOTS of good info on bottle feeding breastfed babies.

We really liked the joovy boob bottles- easy to clean and only a few parts. We also had he Tommie tippie bottles which my husband hated. I have no idea why but since he usually gave bottles we rarely used them.

Depending on what kind of pump you choose to get, it may come with bottles. If so, I would wait and try those bottles before going out and spending any money on other brands. My Medela came with 4 bottles and DS took them no problem - we went and bought more of the same brand. Also, BRU sometimes has a coupon where if you spend $14 or something you get a free bottle - I think it is Dr. Browns, but I could be wrong - good way to get a free trial though. I also got a free Avent (whatever it is called) brand one from Motherhood with a purchase. I would not buy many at all - try one, see how they like it. Go from there.
  • We used Breastflow bottles because of the slow flow that mimicked BFing and they were awesome! I think they may be out of business, but there are a few other brands out there that do the same thing.
  • As a nanny, I love the Avent bottles with the natural nipples. My god-daughter was fed with them also and it's what I'm planning to use.
  • Dr Browns bottles all the way for us.
  • I think I will use the ones we have gotten as samples + the ones with the pumps. And then only buy 1 brand to start. I decided on the Joovy Boob, both for the features and also because they have a glass bottle option, which my husband likes.
  • I'm using the joovy boob bottles. Hopefully my LO likes them!!
  • My mum said to me the other day "it's not the bottle, it's the teets" - meaning it doesn't really matter which bottle you get, your baby will struggle with/prefer different teets. This changed my perspective as now I'm looking at bottles that have a wide range of teets rather than actual brands. The bottle part is just a receptacle for the milk, the flow of the milk and the shape baby prefers is all the teet part which you can buy separately and connect to the bottle part.
I've also been told not to buy loads of the same bottles/teets until you see which baby prefers. So I'll probably buy 2 bottles and a couple of teets, try those teets and if we have no luck, try another.. Just to save money on buying loads of one type and then baby not taking to them.
(I plan on breast feeding but want to use bottles for our last feed if possible so my husband can be involved etc.)
  • I EBF so my daughter did not get many bottles. I had a dozen different types which were hand me downs. I found that the cheapo playtex were best because they had the fewest parts to clean (only 3- nipple, ring, and bottle) and didn't leak. My daughter didn't care.
