ER, urgent care, or wait? UTI/Kidney Infection?

I am 17 weeks and I'm having lower abdominal cramping centered above my pubic bone, lower-mid back pain, and urinary frequency. There is pressure and pain when I go, but no burning, blood, or odd-looking or smelling urine.

No fever.

It's Memorial Day so my midwives are out. Can I go to urgent care? Or do I need to go to the ER because of the cramping, in case I need an ultrasound or monitoring?

FTM. Thanks for your help. I'm also calling the midwife answering service but it can take them a bit to get back to me.

I would go to urgent care if they feel an ER visit is warranted they will refer you.

  • Try urgent care first. They can lead you in the right direction.
  • I treated mine naturally with cholodial silver and D-manosse
  • Don't wait, go to urgent care. Finding out what's going on quickly is always best!
  • Like others have said, go to urgent care and get the test for a uti, it will give you piece of mind. Good luck!

  • Thanks! The midwife called me back and she said urgent care, and if I have a kidney infection they'll send me to the hospital.

The wait time is 1.5 hours. Ugh.

I would go to urgent care. UTI can cause preterm labor & infection or sepsis. I'm not trying to fear monger. I know more than one person that has lost their children this way. Get treated ASAP.

  • I would go to an urgent care. This happened to me and I didn't go. It turned into a kidney infection!! The back pain is what tells me something is wrong.
  • I went to urgent care and they said I had a UTI. They were concerned I might have kidney involvement, but did not send me to the ER. I was given 5 days of Macrobid. If I feel worse they told me to go back or to the ER.

I'm not sure I got the best care today. My urinalysis results said I had "many" amorphous crystals and I'm a bit worried I have a kidney infection. No blood in urine though.

Amorphous urates aren't anything to be particularly worried about. They can be present in a healthy individuals urine. Make sure you're drinking plenty of water.
  • Thanks. I was also nervous because they wanted to give me a shot of an antibiotic I'm allergic to (noted on my chart and I told them all my allergies).

I took the first pill, took a long nap, and drank a lot of water. I'm definitely not 100% but I'm feeling a bit better.
  • Now it's almost 1 a.m. And I can't sleep because of the pain and cramping in my lower abdomen and back. I don't know if I just need to give the antibiotic more time, or if this is getting worse. I'm hoping to make it until my midwife's office opens. I don't want to go to the ER but at the same time I'm scared something is really wrong. I've never cramped like this with a UTI.
  • If it feels wrong go to the ER. However when I had to take macrobid earlier in my pregnancy due to a uti I had serious cramping and diarrhea from the medicine. Maybe it's that? Try eating some bread or something and see if it helps?

Go to the ER if it feels wrong and keep us updated!

  • I'm at the midwife's right now. I'll let you know what happens. Thanks for all the help and support.
  • The midwife thinks I might not even have a UTI, but I need to stay on antibiotics until my culture comes back. She said if it wasy kidney I'd be in a lot more pain, have a fever, etc. She listened to the heartbeat and it was 160, and the baby moved a lot. She said to come back if I'm significantly worse, but to otherwise give it until next Monday.
  • I was in the same boat as you this pasta weekend Saturday I woke up with achey lower abdomin and no other symptoms really I called the dr that was on call and they had me go into labor and delivery to get checked out and good thing I went. I ended up having a terrible UTI and was having contractions every two minutes until the IV antibiotics kicked in. I've never had one of those before. Being only 21 weeks along those contractions were scary and they kept me over night. So better safe to call about pains than just trying to ignore them. I'm with you I still don't feel like my normal self and wonder if the medicine is working :/ feel better soon everyone!

Hope everything is going well but id say if you have repeat episodes of acute pain id get to the er asap. Worst case scenario they tell you you're ok! I'd want an MD to weigh in on anything that felt too wonky. Good luck and hope you're feeling better!
