Work out

Id love to get a feel of what workouts everyone has been able to keep up! Im 25 weeks and feel like i can and should be doing more but unsure of what. I have a treadmill and bike i alternate with daily. Light 5 pound weights and normally do 100 squats a day. Just curious what everyone is doing and how they are feeling with body changes and working out.

Re: Work out

  • I just got a beach cruiser on Friday and have been biking six miles a day since then.  We have a bike patch through our neighborhood and I've been enjoying the beautiful weather and quiet time to myself.  I also take my daughter on at least a two mile walk each day.  I try to get in squats and pushups most days too.  I'm not doing nearly as much as I could be but my husband has been gone for over four months and it's difficult to get time to myself to work out.

  • I was doing T25 every day until a few weeks ago. Decided that fresh air and sunshine were better, so now I do a steep 1-mile hike on trail 5 days a week, and 100 squats a day. Some days I'm lazy or bad (I had cheesecake for breakfast today haha), but most of the time I stick to this routine. I've had absolutely no morning sickness (or pregnancy symptoms in general), so that makes it a lot easier to exercise a lot. I've gained 10 pounds at 24 weeks.

I still do Crossfit 4-5 days a week and modify if I need to. I also started running/walking 2-3 miles 2x a week on days when I don't have the ability to Crossfit due to time conflicts. I really enjoying the running because it clears my head! I bought a belly band I wear during runs because it helps with round ligament pain!

I am also 24 weeks and have gained 10 pounds. Also, I talked with my OB at last appointment and she said you really only gain .5-1 pound during the last month because baby is pretty much at full potential by then. So she expects maybe another 5-10 pounds total for my pregnancy. I was kinda surprised by that because I have been thinking I still had a lot if weight to gain! Anyhow, just wanted to pass that info along!

Hope this helps! Just listen to your body and keep moving as best you can!

  • I have been able to run 3 times a week (just between 4-5 miles) and then strength workouts 2 times a week (squats, light weights, machines at the gym, etc).  I have been really happy that I have been able to keep this routine for my entire pregnancy so far, I am 23 weeks today.

Hopefully I can keep it up, but I am also curious to how long some STMs were able to keep working out.  I am thinking that I might not be able to keep this up past the end of June, but I hope I can!!
  • I've been doing the elliptical for 20 minutes for cardio. Doing leg extensions and curls, calf raises, squats and lunges for legs. For arms doing dumbbell extension, kickbacks. Seated inclined chest press with Dumbbells or pull downs . I pretty much do anything I can find on Pinterest or the Internet and just listen to my body. I obviously don't do ab work outs or stop when my stomach muscles contract or get too tight. I also spread all these workouts through out the week and pay attention to my heart beat and stay hydrated. I started out light to see how my body recovers and just adjust from there.
  • Ive gained 15 pounds so far, doctor says im on track but its hard to watch the new cellulite and marks:/ I want to stay as active as possible for as long as possible and love hearing what everyone is doing it motivates me to try new things!
  • I usually do 45 min of cardio 5/week. I mix it up with 10-15 minutes on different machines. . Walking steep inclines, running, stair climber ect. I'm still lifting pretty heavey weights too..i squat 50 lbs (which is less than i was doing pre preg so my dr said it was ok) and use 15-20lb dumbells for other workouts. I've kept up some ab stuff too. Hoping the hard work now pays off after delivery!
  • @baker1jm2 what types of ab workouts are you doing?

I've been doing nothing. Whoops! I work outside most days (live on a ranch) so I consider that my exercise. I did notice I'm more sore at the end of the day than usual so I started doing stretches too but nothing special.
  • It is so great to get more ideas. I had to stop running (miscarriage scare early and Dr said it would be risky to run) but I do 4-5 miles of speed walking with my dog (Who still thinks we should be running the distance...) I've also found some good pregnancy workout DVDs at the library - excited to try Pilates this week!
  • I've been doing 40 minutes of cardio 4-5 days a week. I recently switched from the treadmill to the elliptical just because there is much less impact. My doctor said as of this week I have to stop squatting and lifting more than 35 pounds so...I'm trying to figure out the rest of my routine without lifting too heavy or squatting. I've been using machines more, like the leg press, to compensate for my missing moves, but I've honestly got pretty bad about the weight training part of my work out the last couple weeks.

100 squats a day?! Damn girl that's awesome! I've got to up my squat game lol. I heard doing squats is really great to prepare for labor!

Yeah, just start with 25 squats at a time and build it up from there, you can do it!

I have been swimming laps (2500 yards or 1.5 miles) 5 to 6 times a week. I also get in 45 minutes of "dry land (squats, push-ups, planks, etc.") twice a week. I love my alone time in the pool, I use the time to talk to the baby and tell him how he is going to be so healthy when he is born. I'm up 13 lbs so far and feeling great! Keep up all of the hard work ladies, I know it will pay off big time for labor and for our little babies :)
  • Just curious...has anyone else had their doctor tell them no squatting after 24 weeks? I've always been a squatter so I thought he was insane when he told me this, but then my trainer seconded it saying nope I needed to quit and start doing other movements instead. I trust my trainer completely (probably more than my doctor even), but then on here I'm seeing a lot of ladies still squatting so I was just wondering :)

Hmmmmm.. I'm asking my doctor this at my next appointment. Thank you so much for sharing! It wouldn't surprise me because there's often a "cut of point" for things like this during pregnancy. Definitely something to consider!

I would love to know what he says! I was just curious and starting to wonder if I was the only one. I haven't had any complications or risks or anything so I was surprised when I was told I couldn't squat anymore.

  • @excited2bmommy09 I'll let you guys know as soon as I ask my doctor! I actually remember reading something about not squatting anymore at a certain point, but I also read that squatting helps prepare some key muscles for labor. So it's pretty confusing lol.
  • @shaunnarose it definitely gets confusing! I've switched to doing leg presses and other modified work outs to kinda try and work the same muscles (all doctor approved lol) so I am not sure what the exact issue is with squats. I should have asked why! Thanks for asking and letting us know what your doc says

I found this article too that clarifies somewhat?? Not sure how reliable it is but it's the best thing I could find lol.
  • Hahaa now I'm even more confused! It makes complete sense to me why squatting would be good to do, but I'm not a medical professional or even fitness professional so...I have been relying on my doctor and trainer to keep me on the right fitness path. I'll ask for more details too at my next dr's appointment

I asked my doctor and she said squats are fine in my case, and we'll check things at 32 weeks to make sure it's okay to continue them every day. Maybe it's different for each pregnancy? I would definitely stop if it got uncomfortable or if there was any cramping etc. I'll check with my doc again next week at my appt, but for now, I'm keeping them up.

Yeah I would do them as long as possible! I would imagine like everything else it is different for every pregnancy. I was just starting to feel sad that I can't do one of my favorite exercises and everyone else still gets to do them lol. That was my inner two year old pouting about it ;)

  • Man ladies, you are so impressive!  I've got a 2 year old at home and I just can't seem to get my act together to regularly exercise.  I've been going to a Reformer Pilates class once a week, but even that is a struggle because sometimes DH can't get home in time for me to go.

I know I need to up my game in terms of squats, walking, kegels, etc. but this has given me a total kick in the pants.  Thanks for the motivation ladies!
  • Oh, and I did Bradley Method classes with my first and we were encouraged to squat squat squat.  Basically, get to the point where you're squatting instead of bending over for EVERYTHING.  It opens the hips, trains the leg muscles, and tones the pelvic floor.
  • I'm 24 weeks today. I walk about 2 miles 3-5 times a week and go to a barre class 2-3 times a week. It's a combination of yoga, Pilates and ballet, I love it! I've gained 7 pounds so far. When the pool heats up I plan on swimming laps but it's still too chilly for that :)

I've gained a ton of weight but still eating healthy. I've been running 20-30 miles a week (w some walking uphills) I also do insanity, lift weights, kettlebell, started spinning. I definitely need one of those bands for the round ligament pain I been feeling here and there. I'm at 22 weeks, My first child and hoping I can keep this up for the rest of the pregnancy.

@sidskinner i do all different kinds of planks, lots of oblique exercises and lower ab ones where i lay on back but prop up on my forearms so I'm not lying flat on my back (bicycle kicks, leg lifts etc)

@excited2bmommy09 i asked at my 24 week apt bc I've been squatting 50 lbs still and my dr said it was fine and to just listen to my body. She said she'd be surprised if i could do it much longer but almost 26 weeks and going strong!
