Keeping up (or down) your prenatals?

Hi ☺️ just looking for your thoughts or tricks or what you're doing...
Before being pregnant I started taking my prenatal pills at night before bed bc they upset my stomach when I took them in the morning. Fast forward to 38 weeks into the pregnancy and now I'm not keeping any food down at night due to awesome heartburn.
I was thinking of starting to take my pills with dinner so I'd have some time for them to possibly digest before I head to bed and hopefully I'd get some of the benefits before I puke up dinner.
I have an apt this week and I'll ask my doc but I just wondered what y'all thought? How are you handling your prenatals these days? Anyone else having the same puke up everything problem?

  • I always take mine with my breakfast and some OJ but I still get heartburn right before bed :( and yes sometimes they make me feel a little nauseous but I think it's because the smell of them.

  • I actually take my prenatal vitamins with my breakfast. Its the one consistent meal every day. I never know when I'm going to eat dinner (time of day) and I might forget otherwise, so breakfast it is! Wait an hour and take my iron with oj

  • I take mine around 930pm - I'd read that in the first trimester this would help to avoid morning sickness. Not sure if this is why, but I never did get it! I do have the heartburn issue now. I just have been dealing with it by taking zantec along with my prenatal. I don't think it would hurt to change my routine to avoid the heartburn, but I'm not sure that changing it would fix the heartburn and I'm also not sure that I'd remember to take the vitamin if I switched things up. So I'm leaving it as is. But like I said, I don't think changing it would hurt! Definitely ask your doctor though, I am far from an expert!

  • I take mine at night too and even with heartburn I've been ok. I always take them at least 1 hour before bed and make sure to have a piece of bread or a few crackers with them. I think taking them with dinner is a good idea and you'll have the whole evening to control the heartburn before bed. Any way you can keep them down is worth a try :)
  • i think i took prenatals like 10 times this whole time.
  • I switched to Rainbow Light Precious Gem Gummies which are food-based with no dyes (unlike many prenatal gummies). I think they taste awesome. Because you snack on three a day, I think they are easier to process.
  • Aw you poor thing! I usually just take mine with dinner but I haven't thrown up regularly since week 16 or so. Good luck to you!

I still just take the gummies without iron...... Can't take the iron.
  • I switched I was taking them at night but am now taking them in the morning with my bp pills. I might switch my iron too. I take a heartburn pill at night but it's been too much and I feel like crap the entire evening. So tonight I'm taking my bp and the rest in the morning. I take bp twice a day anyway so the pills can go with either time. I started throwing up again the other day but I think that was something I ate not the pills. But I am very much looking forward to not taking them soon. I'm super over the lemonade raspberry flavor gummies. And the iron, bp pills, and heartburn.lol.
  • I still take mine at night. In the beginning they made me sick no matter when I took them, but now they don't bother me. I'll be glad to stop taking them though, I feel like I'm taking a pill that you would give a horse...they're huge!
  • I take my prenatals at lunch, with my magnesium pill. I take iron with a Vitamin C pill at night before bed. I take my hypothyroid medicine before breakfast. This schedule has helped my bathroom schedule stay regular, has helped me remember each pill more regularly, and the timing is right for all the weird absorption specifications for each pill.

Funny I'm the only lunch time prenatal taker. To each her own, I guess!
  • Prenatal used to make me feel sick in the first tri, and a friend suggested to me that I swallow them not before or after a meal but when I'm halfway finished with my meal. So you got some food in your stomach and then some food on top of the pills. Sounds silly and it might just be in my head but it seems to work for me.
  • I could not take anything even tried anything, so in the same boat as @JessHeppell! So I have been eating healthy, etc.

  • I have to take the gummy vitamins without iron. I've always always had trouble with the iron even before pregnancy. The typical one a day vitamin would come back up within 10 mins of taking them so I just went straight to vitamins without iron... And now I'm anemic.. Wonder if there's a correlation.

I'm a total carnivore and was declared borderline anemic in April. Really shocked me. However that particular blood test was after I spent a week staying with a vegan friend, so always wonder if it was a fluke from that week.

My nails and hair are growing so fast from all these vitamins!

My prenatals are a daily dose of 3 pills and I also take calcium, which is 2 pills. I take a prenatal and calcium at breakfast, a prenatal at lunch, and a prenatal and calcium at supper. That way all the vitamins go into my system and I won't allow any to go to waste and I won't get sick off of them. I have always divided up the pills at three meal times for years due to my doctor telling me it's best to allow your body to fully absorb the vitamins a little at a time since your body can only absorb so much at once.
