Panic mode/ Shampoo

So I am in a serious panic. I was just reading that shampoos that have Sodium Lauryl Sulfate may cause birth defects. I was my hair every day (sometimes more than once- I am aware this is unnecessary) I checked my shampoo and of course this is the second ingredient after water! I am 33 weeks and so scared that my shampoo may cause a birth defect. I have been using this the entire time. Did everyone else know this? Any moms with kids already use shampoo that has Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (which I think most do??) while pregnant and not have any problems?

Re: Panic mode/ Shampoo

  • Honestly have never checked my shampoo with any of my kids but out if curiosity checked it for you mine has it too and to be honest not really concerned.

  • Thank you so much for looking! It helped me relax a bit.

  • SLS is basically the stuff that makes it bubble and almost all shampoo/soap/face cleanser has it
I really wouldn't stress too much as I'm sure most expecting mothers have used it unknowingly.
  • If you're concerned, switch to a natural brand like Acure. Natural products typically skip that, since it is an unnecessary ingredient.
  • I just checked mine, and both brands I have in my shower right now (dove and garnier fructis) have it as well. My first child was fine, so I'm not entirely concerned.
  • Thank you all for you feedback. Feeling a little better. I am going to switch. I opened up the all natural baby shampoo to use on myself last night. It's so hard when you try to do everything that's best for your baby and then u read something like that.
  • But I'm sure you are all right and most people use it with no problems. Thanks again!
  • Most toothpastes have SLS too. Never heard of it having a link to birth defects. Like @lindsaypkelly said, it's the stuff that makes it bubble or lather.

I have three different shampoos and they all have it. I've been using the same brands since first trimester. I wouldn't worry I used the same brands of shampoo with my first LO and he's ok.

Wow... No I did not know that! But I mean how many other moms used shampoo while pregnant? I did with both my girls and so far this one as well.. Maybe ask your doctor about it.. Might just be one of those internet things? That's so weird...
  • I wouldn't worry... if it was a real concern drs would say something considering pretty much everyone uses shampoo..
  • I bought shampoo, body wash, conditioner & toothpaste from whole foods when I found out I was pregnant. Mostly because I'm paranoid of chemical additives in general. But as pp have said, if there was an ultra clear link, there would be warnings against using them while pregnant.

I just don't trust big companies or the government to set out warnings for people when it comes to these things.
  • I completely agree with you. I try to do a lot of organic ect. I spent a ton of time looking into the best type of shampoo ect for the baby. I don't know why I never thought of this. I do agree that there is probably not a clear link or dr. Would say something. Thanks!
