Ultrasound

i have a quick question and feel free to put me in my place if I'm being to "anxious". I am 14 weeks and 2 days today and I have only had one ultrasound. I had one at 6 weeks just to see how far along I actually was because my periods are very very abnormal and I was even on the pill. As I read through comments and boards it seems as though mamas that are about as far as long as me have had two or three already. Is only having one so far normal?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, FTM here

Re: Ultrasound

  • 100% normal. Most get a dating ultrasound and an anatomy scan.
Trust that your body is doing what it needs to do.
Those who have gotten more are usually high risk.

  • ^^ this. If you are low risk sometimes you only get the anatomy scan at 20 weeks. Normal.

I think it is normal my doctor wouldn't even see me until I was 10 weeks and then I received a dating ultrasound if to make sure we were on track (the baby was a week behind my edd). I had my next appointment at 14 weeks where I received a short ultrasound because the doctor couldn't find the baby's heartbeat with the Doppler (we could hear little swipes from the baby kicking so he wasn't worried but I really wanted I make sure the baby had a strong heart beat). I won't have another ultrasound until my anatomy scan which I have to schedule between 18-20 weeks. I think woman who has 5 or 6+ ultrasound are high risk or have a history of mc.

I'm 14weeks and 6days, I have not received an ultrasound. My last pregnancy I didn't get one until 20 weeks. I'm expecting it to go the same this time. Some of it does depend on your insurance too, as certain companies only let you get so many if it's a normal/low risk pregnancy. I'm definitely anxious to see our little one, but I know the doc is doing what he is suppose to do.

  • Thank you for all the responsesn I appreciate it! I was just wondering since my doctor hasn't even bought up another ultrasound.
  • I am in Canada so not sure how it is in the states, but pretty much everyone here only gets one ultrasound at 20 weeks. Unless you are high risk or some other factors its completely normal!
We do hear the heart beat with the Doppler at every appointment though, so I'm not concerned :)
I'm just sad we will only have one chance at finding out the gender!
  • I'm only getting the 20 week ultrasound since i was tracking my cycle and was confident on my conception/ovulation dates. Many of the women who get extra ultrasounds are because they have had miscarriages or are high risk. It's good news you're not getting extra tests because it means your doctor considers you low risk.

This is my third pregnancy, with a history or 2 Mc. I had the initial dating ultrasound which showed I was a week behind based on LMP, so they did another ultrasound to confirm baby was growing well.

I then had a quick one at my 11 week appointment, done by my OB. Partly for my piece of mind and 2 just to make sure their was still a strong HB. She didn't even take measurements on the last one, just checked the HR and had some fun :)

Had I not had a history of Mc I would have had 1 dating and 1 anatomy us.

I think it completely depends on your medical history, doctor, and insurance coverage. I had an ultrasound at my first appointment at 8 weeks, another at 12 for part of genetic testing screen, and I have the option to get a gender screen done at 16, but will be getting my next one at 20 if I opt out.
