Super gross tmi question about diarrhea

I've been having diarrhea since Wednesday. Called my doc yesterday and they said the brat diet and fluids but it's Saturday now and it dosnt seem like it's getting better. Should I go to the ER like they told me to do? I'm 14.5 weeks along... I don't no if it was something I ate or a stomach bug

Re: Super gross tmi question about diarrhea

  • The concern is likely dehydration. If your doctor advised you to go to the ER after a certain amount of time, you should follow their orders. Also consider an urgent care facility over the ER whenever possible. Feel better.

  • I agree with @Ceridwen21! Just like with extreme morning sickness doctors worry about dehydration! I would go to an er or urgent care to see if you are dehydrated and they might even give you fluids!
  • I went to an urgent care, they just said I have to let it run it's course but seriously it's bothering my stomach so bad. I'm not dehydrated but this is worse then morning sickness omg

You honestly might have to go to the ER. I never trust those urgent care places. If your OB gave you a time limit and it's not gone by now I would go. Clearly it's not fun to have to go, but it's really 'bothering your stomach,' so I would say, they can at least give you something for the problem to stop. I went and they prescribed me a pregnancy safe medicine that would relive the issue and it was gone within two days. Hope you feel better.

If your doc gave you a timeline and its passed, I really would go. I'm a nurse and I can say that while the main concern is probably dehydration, if there is a more serious cause, like C-DIF, its important it is treated early, before it gets too out of control. You also have to remember that when you have diarrhea, your body isn't absorbing hardly any nutrients. This could quickly depleat your iron levels/stores amung other very vital nutrients we go through so quickly when we are pregnant.
  • Imodium is safe, try it.
  • Along these lines..... Any of you who've dealt w this before, what did your OB say (if anything) re. the baby's health. I have been having issues since yesterday afternoon. I did speak with the nurse line and they advised to drink lots of fluids and rest. I woke up now still not feeling right and just hate to think if I feel so ill, is there any threat to my baby?

At this state there really isn't much of a threat until you get severely dehydrated. Even then your body will give to the baby first.
If you can't keep anything down for more than a day then I would start getting concerned.
Pushing fluids and rest is what's best to do.
  • You can become dehydrated even if you're constantly drinking and keeping it all down if you have extreme diarrhea because your body pulls all fluids into the bowel and it doesn't stay in your system long enough to pull liquids or nutrients from it. If you start getting any symptoms of dehydration, such as lightheadedness, call your doc.

    How are you doing Shannon?
  • I went to the ER they did blood work and urine tests. Said everything is normal and this bug has to run it's course :( my ob just called and wants me to go give a stool sample today tho so we shall see.
  • Just checking in to see how you're doing! I've been up most of the night for this same reason, will follow the brat diet and drink fluids like suggested here. Hope you're feeling a lot better by now.
