BTDT veterans of 2u2. Looking for survival tips

I'm expecting DS when ODS will be 18 months. Looking for any tips/hacks from those who have BTDT.
Anything from must-have items to strategies for multi-tasking/parenting would be greatly appreciated.
One specific question: what did you do with LO when big sib needed one-on-one time like putting big sib down for naps/night or bath time while LO was awake?

Re: BTDT veterans of 2u2. Looking for survival tips

  • My first 2 are 17 months apart. I could usually get #2 down first for naps then put the older one down. #1 would sit on the floor of the nursery and look at a book quietly while I nursed him to sleep.
dinner, bath and bedtime was a different story. Will you be alone during that time? MH used to work until 9 or 10pm so bath and bedtime was a ton of crying. There was just no avoiding it even if I nursed #2 for an hour straight before I started bathing #1. I just had to let him cry because #1 deserved a little one on one attention and I wanted her to maintain her bedtime routine as much as possible.
It's going to be hard but it won't last for long. five months in was a turning point for us when I could bathe the kids together and #2 would go down for the night before #1.

  • jesselayne8 I will likely be alone but DH returns from work around 7pm so if we push bedtime later there may be nights when DH can help. I'll try to prepare for crying during some of those balancing moments and try to remember it's normal... Good to know that it will improve eventually. One day at a time, right?!
    Thanks!

  • My son turned 2 two weeks after my daughter was born.  While not technically a BTDT mom, I can say that nights where I'm doing it alone for whatever reason, my daughter spends some time in her swing/bouncy seat while I get my son ready for bed, bathed or dinner ready.  Luckily she's a pretty chilled out baby and goes with the flow for the most part.  I'm also lucky enough to have a very affectionate & caring little boy who runs to his sisters aid any time she's upset, so he's a big help if I'm making dinner & she starts fussing.
