Sciatic Pain, help!

I am 27weeks and just the past 2 days have had the worst sciatic pain I've ever felt! I was a college athlete so I'm used to injuries and pain but this hurts!! I hardly even have a belly yet but if I bend a certain way or get up funny it shoots right down my leg and I can't even walk.
Chiropractor or massage?
Will it go away or only get worse the bigger I get? Be honest!
Is it the way the baby might be laying?
This is my first child so I'll take all the advice I can get!
Oh and I have one of those electro therapy pad home machines from Walgreens... Safe to use on my glute area or no??

Re: Sciatic Pain, help!

  • I am 29 weeks and get bad sciatica pain. Yoga, prenatal massage, and a warm bath/heating pad help alleviate my pain. When the baby moves off the nerve I feel relief as well. Some women's pain gets worse the bigger they get, however, mine has been about the same since 26 weeks. Hang in there!

  • I basically put myself on bed rest for a week last month because of mine, but after changing chiropractors and a DO friend of mine trying manipulation, it has improved a ton! I'm actually back to working out but I do still have to ice it and always sleep on the opposite side to keep it from acting up too much.

Find a DO that knows manipulation and ask them to do the Jones strain/counterstrain of the piriformis muscle. My midwife also offered a PT referral, so you may want to ask your dr/midwife about that option.

Good luck! Also, stretching (child's pose, downward dog, table pose) may help as well as sitting on a yoga ball instead of the couch/chair.
  • Mine was awful and I'm a hair dresser and on my feet all day long. I thought I was going to die from pain lol I tried stretching and the chiropractor nothing seem to help. But the one thing that did was defiantly staying off my feet as much as I could, I stopped bending over and I had my S/O rub a gold ball over the areas that hurt the worst for about an hour and the pain really went away! I'm on maternity leave now and being off my feet I haven't had any pain at all. Thank the lord . But Try that it might help a lot for you :) hope it gets better !
  • I had this.  I used a good cold compression back wrap. It still flared up periodically but it reduced the pain level a lot.  The electro pad from walgreens should be fine.  I used a BFST (blood flow stimulation therapy) wrap for carpal tunnel.

  • It may be a dislocated SI joint. Look into that. It's a very similar pain to sciatica but the joint can be popped back in by a chiropractor. I had it throughout the second and third trimesters of my first pregnancy. It's no fun. Hang in there and good luck!!
