Cold cut mistake... or not?

Hi all, so just wanting your opinions on this: today I went to a luncheon at or church and without thinking, I are one of those small ham sandwich slider type things from the caterer... It was a cold sandwich. My annoying anxiety is now going crazy with worry. I'm 16 weeks also. Any thoughts? Thanks!

  • One is 99.9% likely to be fine. Moderation is key :)

  • Deli meats are on the long list of foods recommended to not be consumed during pregnancy. Personally I eat ham sandwiches all the time and I'm fine.
  • I've been craving Jimmy Johns all the time. Moderation is key for me too but all food being an aversion food I will eat whatever I am craving
  • Eat all the meats!!

Thank y'all! Forgive my extra anxiety ridden self these days! ;-)
  • Lunch meat is on the list of foods you should not eat because it can contain Listeria. Listeria is rare but it can cause problems for baby. The chances of getting it from eating lunch meat once in a while is almost nothing.
You probably have a higher chance something happening to the baby in a car accident, but we are still driving around every day. That being said what you eat is easily controlled so why take an unnessary risk. But if you eat something that is not recommended once in a while don't worry about it.

  • I understand the need/desire to avoid it. They tell us to avoid it because of the small risk of listeria (which has an incubation period of up to 2 months so it's not like we'd know right away that we were infected). But I eat it. For some reason I crave lunch meat while pregnant. Go figure. I eat a turkey sandwhich at least 5 times a week. I don't heat it up, I eat it cold. I'd be devastated if a stupid sandwhich hurt my child but I consider the risk to be insanely small. Just be educated on the risks and go from there.

  • I just want to add that while I still do worry about listeria (amongst the other 1000 things that could go wrong), I don't worry about lunch meat anymore. At this point I'm more concerned about ice cream having it. The trust issues due to BlueBell are real.

  • Hi,

I've had Jimmy John's a few times and so far so good. Like previous posters mentioned moderation is key. One time I got an awful migraine at work and the only thing around was an Advil so I took one and felt guilty for the rest of the day, so I get it but lunch meat's risks are so low. Your baby is just fine. :)

  • I'm a rebel...I eat deli meat all the time, I eat sushi, rare steak, shrimp and ceasar dressing! I've seen all of these on don't eat lists...but, baby gets what baby wants! Just don't overdo lol
