High-Risk Pregnancy

Short cervix

I've been being monitored for a short cervix since 20 weeks when I lost some mucus plug. Everything last friday looked pretty good - holding strong at 2.9cm. No finneling. Well I had a lot of cramping/contractions this weekend and then spotting yesterday morning so I went back to doc yesterday and it fell to 2.5cm. I'm on a restricted activity until Friday when they will check again and do the FEE test (I think that's the acronym). I will be 28 weeks tomorrow. Anyone else have a similar situation? If so, we're you ever put on full bed rest? At what point? Any info would be greatly appreciated! I'm kind of freaking out!

Re: Short cervix

  • I can't offer much help, but I'll share my situation. I was diagnosed with short cervix at 19w scan. I'm having twins and the cervix was 1.5 at that point with funneling. I was prescribed progesterone suppositories and told to live normal life. Since then I had weekly scans with high risk specialists. The cervix has been changing from 1.5 to 1.9 to 1.3 etc... They say it's not bad and I'm hoping it will hold for couple more months. I'm only 23w 3d now. They don't do bed rest anymore as it has been proven ineffective. It's been very confusing, some doctors tell me to take it easy and I do my best, but I have a 19 month old at home:) The specialists keep telling me to live normally because it won't make a difference. I just had to quit having sex:/  Oh, and I've been having lots of contractions since I was 16w, but that may be because it's my second pregnancy.
It's all very confusing especially when they tell you there is nothing you can do, but I'm just hoping my girls will make it!
    Best wishes for you!

  • At my 13 week scan, my cervix was measuring 1.8cm.  My doctor did a cerclage immediately the next day.  I am on pelvic rest the remainder of my pregnancy and started progesterone suppositories 2 weeks ago that I will continue until the cerclage is removed at 36 or 37 weeks.  I asked about bed rest, and my doctor said that she will not put me on it, unless it is absolutely necessary.  From what I've read and understood, most women that are put on bed rest are put on it right away and taken off of it around 30ish weeks (since most doctors will not necessarily stop labor and delivery at that point).  So far, so good for me.  My cervix has actually lengthened to about 2.5cm since getting the cerclage placed.

The test you're talking about is FFN (fetal fibronectin) and it is something like 99% effective in detecting if you're NOT going to go into labor in the next week or two (the percentage for positive labor is lower and I think doctors take it with a grain of salt).  Good luck!  Hope everything works out :)

  • Last friday i had a cervical cerclage put in my cervix was 1.5 i was also givin progesterone to put in vaginally and im also on bed rest. It is a very scary situation to be put in. I know how you feel cause im feeling the same way. Im 21 weeks and hoping i will last till almost full term or full term ! Keep your head up :)
  • I'm 22 weeks (tomorrow). I found out my cervix was 2cm and funneling last week. Yesterday it was 0.9cm. I am so worried because she won't be viable until 25 weeks. My doctors have not recommended bed rest even though I work at a stressful hospital job and am on my feet 11+ hours a day with a hellish commute. We were supposed to go on our babymoon to a resort in Mexico on Thursday (2 days from now) but decided to cancel the trip last night. Feel disappointed, sad and scared. I would do whatever it takes to make it to viability at least...
  • I've been on modified bed rest and pelvic rest since 20 weeks with funneling and shortening cervix. Still have constant contractions and cramping but cervical length hasn't changed much and I have weekly appointments with a high risk OB. Measurements every week. It's gone from 2.5cm to 1.3cm since 20 weeks I am now 32 weeks (on Friday ) and holding strong. If you can make it to 24 weeks theyll give you steriod shots to help mature your baby's lungs. The NICU has come so far. Try not to stress. That will make you crazy. Just take it a day at a time. For every day your baby stays in you, it takes 2-3 days off their hospital stay. Every day is a victory! Hang in there mama.
  • My doctors put me on strict bedrest at 29 weeks due to a funneling cervix and preterm labor (I have a uterine anomaly, so the weight of the baby caused the funneling.)  Some doctors do not advise bedrest, but mine really felt that keeping the pressure off the cervix was essential.  It worked for me.  Bedrest was lifted at 36 weeks and my water broke at 37 weeks exactly.

I'm now on my second pregnancy and will be doing progesterone shots in hopes of preventing preterm labor.  If bedrest is advised, I will do it again in a heartbeat.

    Hang in there!
