breast milk coming in

Hey there... with ds1 i had a ton of pain in my breast about 3 weeks before I had him. I am now 4 days till my due date and nothing. If i squeeze a nipple early in the a.m. a small amount of clear liquid comes out but by afternoon nothing. Im a little nervous my milk is going to be a no show for this baby. Any 2nd or more times moms have any experience. Ds1 was the easiest breastfeeding child and I really want that for this baby. Thanks

  • Oh SORRY .i did a search but didn't find anything. Thanks. I just remember the pain with the milk last time and nothing yet this time had me worried. Have a great day!
  • I never leaked with my twins but I produced enough for 1.5 kids. There's no indication that leaking will produce a bigger supply.

I wasn't trying to imply this at all! I had a feeling a search wouldn't pull anything up. Just sharing my own concerns and what I was told when I shared those similar concerns
  • I was having a lot of birth fears... Then did some reading and research, and those went away. Now I am having some breastfeeding fears. But am also trying to do some reading, and planning for all my "what if" fears. But recently, I've decided that - though I really really want to breastfeed - if it doesn't work out, such is life. I think with lots of effort and support, most women are able to. But not all. And while that may suck and be a disappointment, I am prepared for that. If my kid can get nutrition another way, so be it.

I don't wish anxiety on anyone, but it's comforting to know you've already had success with BFing and it's still a point of anxiety for you. Makes me feel more normal!

Yes i had the easiest experience. No nipple pain no latch issues nothing. But everytime is different. Dont worry to much!! Your right it is what it is.
  • While I'm pregnant I leak a lot on some days and some days there's nothing at all. But 3 days after having my first son I was fully engorged and leaking a ton of milk.

Your cup size, how much you leak while pregnant and all that doesn't effect your future supply.

Feeding often and pumping after baby is born will increase your supply.
  • DH keeps asking when my milk will come in and I know some ladies have already leaked already but I haven't. I asked my sister today if hers came in beforehand and she said it didn't. I think it varies person to person and most likely pregnancy to pregnancy!

For a FTM your milk can take anywhere from 2-4 days to come in, so be patient. For a STM, your body knows what to do, so it typically comes in sooner. However, leaking doesn't have any correlation with your supply. As a NICU nurse, I encourage mom's to keep trying breastfeeding and if that isn't going well, make sure you're pumping religiously every 2-3 hours. The stimulation telling your body that you need milk is what helps produce your supply. Also, skin to skin contact has been shown to help increase milk supply. Make sure you are drinking a lot of water, sleeping, and eating. Lack of sleep and stress impact breast milk production.

I also had a friend that couldn't get her son to breastfeed right away. She committed to pumping and attempted breastfeeding at least once a day. After 3 months, he finally took to it. Don't give up if breastfeeding I'd your plan!
  • With my first I never leaked or had any before she was born and I was able to breastfeed for over a year. This time it's the same, due in 3 weeks and nothing yet.
  • How often do you ladies leak? Just started today and it was so awkward!! Just curious to how to handle this since I have 3 weeks to go, and one very leaky boob!

@Jna0407 Good points! If you're dehydrated, you will have supply issues. I had that problem a few times until I realized it. Duh. I was starting to get worried and then felt like a total noob.

I usually do after the shower or when I'm nesting.

I usually just use a disposable breastpad or wipe clean.
It's not really a flow for me.

Thanks! That's actually really comforting that I may not be boob-drooling everywhere. Ha!

I was at a post/prenatal workout class and one of the mamas shared that her daughter couldn't latch. She exclusively pumped. One day when her LO was 4 months old, she tried and she had been exclusively nursing for the last 5 months. I thought that was pretty cool and reminded me that you just never know.....

This is similar to my BF story. My DS had no interest in BFing but I was determined that he would get my milk. So I pumped and supplemented formula. Around 3 months I tried to BF again, and at this point, he got it and I was able to BF for 3 more months. I was so happy!
  • Thanks everyone we will just see how it goes. Guesa the old " every pregnancy is different " will apply here

I was leaking enough to use pads all day back around 22-28 weeks or so. Not leaking a ton, but multiple times a day. I made some two-ply flannel pads and that was sufficient. Then it died down, and just started up again last week (36 weeks). Again not too much, but enough to soak through a non-padded bra and shirt. So now I'm only wearing padded bras and sticking the pads (or Bamboobies ones) in there when I notice I need to. This obviously is super individualized, so I don't know if that will help you at all, but there you go!

Thanks! It was so alarming when it happened, and later, my hubby made a crazy comment about worrying about me soaking through his shirt. Haha, butthead with a cute butt.
