2nd Trimester

Dying hair..??

Is it safe to dye your hair while being pregnant? My hair is fading and I want to dye it but I'm not sure if I should. .. What do you think?

Re: Dying hair..??

  • I wouldn't but ask your doctor what he/she thinks.

  • I've heard that you can do it in your second tri but try to find something ammonia free and if you do it on your own do it in a well ventilated area.

My doctors have said it's absolutely fine. I dyed my hair through both pregnancies and have two healthy, happy girls.
  • I've highlighted mine through 2 1/3 pregnancies.

My doc said trimester but only highlights.

It also depends on products used. The salon I go to uses a very low ammonia based product that is safe. There are also ammonia free options I think.
  • I did it at home at 22 weeks. My doctor said it was ok as long as I had good ventilation. I opened all the windows, then I sat outside in my backyard (lol, I was a sight).

I used regular hair dye, John Frieda to be exact. I know there are alternatives but I've tried some of the more natural and I've gotten not very good results.

As PP said depending on where you live there are salons that may have good options for you. Just make sure you tell them you're pregnant when booking the appointment.
  • MY OB had no strong feelings on it. So, I talked to my stylist (who is a good friend), and I got my highlights in the end of my first trimester. The salon is well ventilated, and the brand had no ammonia.
Looking "good" made me feel better. It may sound ridiculous to some, but when I feel like poo it helps boost up my moral by getting some pampering.
  • I'm 13 week and just got my hair bleached. My doctor and hair stylist both said it was completely fine so don't worry about it!
  • I did it at home and used an ammonia-free dye. This type of dye works on my hair and it is about 3x more expensive than regular dye. And you have to buy it from a natural food store. I prefer the no ammonia smell, and I feel it may be safer. My OB GYN said regular hair dye shouldn't be an issue, but going ammonia-free gave me peace of mind.
  • Doc said it was fine. I dyed my hair a day after i found out. I asked my stylist what she thought (since she WORKS in a salon and has two kids) she said it's fine but to stick to highlights in first trimester as they don't touch the scalp.

    Which is what i did.

She also said going lighter is safer because there is no melanin or less melanin... (something like that) and somehow that is a safer option.

I'd recommend highlights or lowlights, nothing that sits on the scalp.
  • I just hit 14 weeks and got my hair dyed saturday. I do go to an organic salon so it is ammonia free dye.
  • Good Ventilation. Don't message it onto your actual scalp.
