renting breast pump/and optional components

I am trying to weigh my options. I am a FTM, so I have no idea how this adventure will go. I have researched and chosen the medela breast pump (I think the instyle model), but there are so many things that go along with it..such as wipes, sanitize bags, pump membranes, extra bottles etc. Has anyone rented the medela breastpump from the hospital?   What are the components that are really needed? What could you do without?

I have chosen the Medela backpack. The extra adapter so I can pump directly into the bag while at work instead of pump and dump into a bottle. Although I kinda of just wanted to pump into the bottle and store, but Im still on the fence with which way to go on that one.

    didn't use the hospital grade pump but used the PISA.  you will need the flanges, membranes, tubing.  I thought only hospital grade pumps were rented out but I could be wrong.  Have you checked to see if your insurance will cover one.  I also preferred pumping directly into the medela bottles and pouring into the lansinoh bags(those bags will freeze flat unlike the medela bags you can directly pump into.  can be a big space saver.)  You don't really need the wipes or sanitizer bags, they are more for convenience but could be nice to have.

    I used the Medela Symphony - the hospital grade rental. Great pump - I highly recommend it. It comes w every thing you need already- flanges, membranes, tubing etc. Although depending how long you plan on pumping, you will need to buy replacement membranes.

    Like the above poster, I preferred pumping in the bottles then portioning out any extra into Lansinoh bags for freezing. You also may want to get an ice pack to keep milk cool during your commute.

    If you have insurance coverage this pump is totally free of charge! It's under the new Obama Affordable Care Act. I own my pump and I have the Pump in Style Medella...works great! I never used higher setting just lower settings but that's all I really needed to get job done!


    Use the site to check if your pump can be covered...it'll save you! It saved me! Of course I just bought the bottles and bags separately for storage but they are considerably affordable!

    I have the Medela Pump in Style Advanced (through insurance) and yesterday rented the hospital grade Medela Symphony. Both do the job but the hospital grade one is much much more efficient and also more comfortable, so worth every penny as far as I'm concerned... I'm still trying to catch up with my son's demand and the lactation consultant strongly recommended going with the Symphony for that purpose.

    Unfortunately, my insurance does not cover breast pump/rentals/parts. My insurance was "grandfathered" before the affordable health care act. I bought my from Target online for $218.00. Thank God it was on sale because in store it was $268.00. 


    I have since figured out that I would like to pump, freeze milk in 1 ounce trays and store in bags accordingly.I can pump at work because it comes with a cooler. I think this would be the easiest way for me because I don't have to thaw from the bag then dump into bottle....just put how many ounces I need in my glass bottle and thaw in bowl of warm water. 

    As far as storage, I agree with @laurasuzanne2006 in reference to the lansinoh bags. I watched on youtube on how to use these bags with my Medela pump because the medela bags are more expensive than the lansinoh bags . So I can create a stock pile.
