Maternal Fetal Medicine Specialist

So this morning I had a message from my OB saying that some antibodies were present in my blood work.  I am 8 weeks today.  The antibodies identified were Anti-S and Anti-E.  I called my OB back to get further information because they wanted me to see this Maternal Fetal Medicine Specialist, so of course I freaked out initially.  I think that's quite normal for anyone to get scared.

I talked to the nurse but she had not yet been able to talk to the OB today, so I may have to wait until Tuesday to find out further information.

She did not feel comfortable discussing it without talking to my OB first, apparently this kind is more rare.

I already have an appt with the specialist at 11 weeks, and I am trying my best not to worry.  Has anyone else experienced any of this? FTM here and really just scared... I have had several complications over the years (HPV, countless abnormal paps, LEEP) I am just ready for me being 'abnormal' to be over.

Sorry for whining..

Re: Maternal Fetal Medicine Specialist

  • Hi! I have always seen an MFM as I have had juvenile diabetes since the age of four. Feel comfort in knowing that they have vast knowledge in high risk pregnancies as that's their specialty.

My MFM moved to Akron, so I'll be seeing a new one, at a brand new hospital. I'm nervous, but confident in knowing that I can rely on my other doctors for consultations during this third pregnancy of mine.

The specialist will be able to answer all of your questions.

  • Hi there! I just received the same news but was told it's probably not a big deal? Do you have positive or negative blood? Mine is positive so I am very confused as to why I have antibodies. This is my third child and I have never had this issue before. I am supposed to have it rechecked in four weeks. Did you ever learn more about what it means?

    Hi @meghajake I am O-

I have actually already gone to my appt, these particular antibodies can create no problem or up to fetal anemia, where there would need to be a transfusion in the uterus.

DH and I both had blood work done the day of my appt and they were looking to see if he was a carrier of the same antibodies which would cause my situation to be more closely monitored (titres).  They initially had no idea where these antibodies came from because I have never had a blood transfusion.

DH came out to be negative for both, which is great news for us because the specialist told me they would no longer need to monitor my numbers because this will have no effect on my pregnancy.  I will still receive the Rhogam shot at 28 weeks because of my RH factor in my blood.

Still creates no explanation where my antibodies came from, but the titres were so low that it could have been exposure from when I was born.

I hope this helps!  The specialist can most certainly help whenever you go to talk to them, it was much more reassuring to hear all the details with them.

  • My sister had this. It showed up in pregnancy 2 and was because baby one had anti bodies from daddy that my sisters body made anti bodies against . Didn't effect baby one but did baby two. Lots of blood work and monitoring but nothing major. Dr said it shouldn't prevent u from having more kids, just will need monitored. She never needed a transfusion for baby or anything
