Calling mamas with long hair!

Hi ladies,
So here is my problem: I'm 30 weeks right now and I have always had long hair. Pregnancy, however, has really increased that. It is currently down to my waist, nearing my butt! I plan on cutting it before I deliver but I'm not sure how much makes sense to take off. As I mentioned, I've had long hair since I was 4 years old so the thought of having short hair freaks me out! But my husband thinks that even cutting it up to boob level will still be too long as baby will spit up, puke, and pull on it at that level. Have any of you mamas had long hair while breastfeeding? Was it a big issue to the point where you would have wanted it shorter or is it realistic of me to think that it won't be a problem? I'd be okay with cutting it shorter if I knew it was going to save me some troubles when she gets here!

  • Mine was about that long when I had my LOs. I loved being able to pull it into a bun when I needed to and not worry about styling it. I resisted the pressure to cut for about 6 months. I only cut it short because that was when they started to grab at it. The main reason though was that my hair got so thick when I was pregnant and stopped falling out, that during postpardum, I had a ton of hair loss (which is normal) which seemed worse only because it was so long. Also, I started tying it back so much that my scalp started to hurt.

I say if you like your hair and it's not bothering you, leave it or only get a few inch trim. You'll know once LO is here what's working for you, and if it's obvious you want a cut, that would be the perfect mommy outing post baby.

  • I've always had long hair. My daughter pulled, chewed on, spit up on, threw up on, etc... my hair all the time. I just got used to the pulling/chewing and washed it when it got spit up on/threw up on. Being a mom doesn't mean you have to have short hair, and you can always put it up easier when its long than when its short if its bugging you. My daughter has just always been hair obsessed. She still runs my husband's really short hair through her fingers every chance she gets at 2.

Also, you are likely to shed considerably right after you have the baby, so I'd wait and see what hormones do to your hair before you do anything too drastic that you might not like. The fast growing is generally limited just to pregnancy, so it may take a very long time to grow it back out if you hate your hair when you cut it.
  • PP have great advice. I used to have long hair, like I would sit on my braid. When I cut it short in college I went too short too fast, and had major issues with it.
If you are going to cut it, I would suggest mid back length, that way it is still decently long, but is easier to brush/put up/style than if it were longer.

  • I agree it's easier to put it up than cut it so short that it can't go up. I personally plan to donate my hair after the baby is born. I've almost always had long hair.
  • My husband suggested the same thing, my only hesitation was wondering if it would be a real pain in the ass to have to tie up so much because I'm always wearing it down. I think I'll take a little off, see how much stays put postpartum, and go from there. Thanks ladies! :)

Never had throw up in my hair and it's to my butt. I wouldn't cut it because it's so easy to put Ina bun and get it all out of the wayS plus my some loves to play with it when he nurses. Cutting to a bob would be way to hard to have to style and handle all the hair near my face.
  • If you decide to cut it shorter you can always donate to Locks of Love. I think they need about 10 inches for a donation. They turn the hair into wigs for chemotherapy patients.
  • Just cut eight inches off mine and it's been the best thing I've done. Don't do locks of love if you donate they only donate to people who can't grow hair back so not cancer patients who get chemo. Who will most likely grow there's back. I think Pantene does a program that allows you to donate and they give to all types of people with hair loss due to
    Medical issues.
  • I've always had long hair mines down my back I didn't cut it when I had my DS i love chucking it in a bun when I need to but still getting to keep my long hair. My son was never really a hair grabber anyway. I don't plan on cutting it this time either.
  • As PP said up in ponytail or bun is easiest. But your hair will fall our shortly after baby so the longer the strands the more you will find them eeeeeverywhere.

  • I would consider long hair to be a non issue.

  • I've almost always had really long hair, I've only cut it off twice right upto my ears. I hated it, it took so much more work every day to wash it and style it. Much easier to just tie it up if it's in the way than wait for it to grow long enough to tie up again
  • Give it a trim to keep it fresh if you want. I prefer longer hair, especially during the newborn stage as it's easy to toss up in a pony or bun. I don't actually remember the girls pulling my hair too much. If you do get a cut, I fully expect pics
  • I have long hair as well (down to my tail bone). I have had it really short before and though it was cute and I liked it. Yet I still love my long hair and so does my hubby and my hairdresser Lol. So I think I will just throw it up into a bun for the first few months. I am going to get it trimmed and styled though before baby is born! Because I know I won't get a chance to for awhile once little man is here.

I think it definitely is personal preference though... If you feel comfortable cutting your hair and it's easier for you I say do it!! You know "YOU" the best!! Every mama is different!
  • I literally just had my hair cut yesterday from mid back length because I was having these same worries. As soon as I cut it I thought I would regret it, but I love it!! Never had my hair this short before lol I don't even have to brush it anymore. I just run my fingers through it and go, it's nice.

Enjoy your long thick hair while it lasts! Around 6-9 months after the baby it'll all start falling out and you'll want to cut it. Until then, live it up!!

But seriously, some babies spit up more often than others and my son didn't spit up much. So getting it in my hair was never an issue. Also, when you have no time to take a shower, your hair will end up in a bun or pony tail anyway!

Also, the baby won't be coordinated enough to pull your hair for a while. So you've got time before you need to worry about that.

My hair has always been very long and very thick and heavy. With pregnancy, its mainly just gotten longer. I'm going to have to cut it regardless because even before pregnancy, I had to have my hair thinned out most of the time. I think I'm going to cut it up to below my boobs (where it normally was pre-pregnancy) and then just see how much more, if any, I need to take off from there. Even though I'm reeeeeally in love with this haircut, I have a feeling it won't look so good on me :-<
  • I have long hair and I will not be cutting it. For me having it long is less work I can throw it up in a pony tail or a messy bun no sweat. If is short im Afro girl and it requires so much work. I don't wear it down enough for her to snack on too much. And it will be up most of the time.

  • @carleyec93 that cut is almost exactly what I have now. I really like it when I style it but honestly, I rarely have the time to style it. I've decided to grow it out.
  • @breezymeema7 I'm glad you told me that because people keep telling me short hair is less work but then I keep hearing from people that it really isn't because you have to style it all the time! And with a newborn?! Ain't nobody got time for that. [-X

  • I have always had long hair but decided to cut it for the summer. I decided on a long bob (lob) because it got the hair off my back but it's still long enough to throw into a ponytail. I think my hair is just too thick to really pull it off, but I'm going to keep it for the summer and then grow it back out.

That said, I don't remember my long hair ever being an issue with a newborn or nursing (until she got older and pulled my hair on purpose). I just cut it this time to make this Texas summer a little more bearable.
