Breastfeeding help!!!!

My little boy is 12 days old!
Currently trying to breastfeed and that's for sure all I want to do. He's doing very well. But recently I descovered that he was latched wrong. My left nipple is very cracked and it's painful to feed. It only hurts at the beginning though. I use lanolin before and after feelings. Should I continue to nurse on it, or should I pump until it heals? Also how long will it be for the soreness to go away..?

Re: Breastfeeding help!!!!

  • I'm from July moms but I might be able to help a little bit . It might sound kinda gross lol . But last night at my breastfeeding class the lady said if that ever happens you can squeeze a little out and rub some on it . That the stuff in your breast milk will help heal it . I'm a ftm though so I'm not sure what to do about pumping or continuing to breastfeed

  • Also a FTM!! :) thank you!! Any advice/ information helps!!
  • Glad I could help :) hope it works for you
  • My lactation consultant says the same thing. Squirt some breast milk out and let it dry and then put the lanolin on. Breast milk has healing properties and is an anti inflammatory, etc

Get an appointment with a lactation consultant to make sure the latch is good. I thought mine was "just uncomfortable" and not technically painful the whole time, but after several ongoing issues, we finally tried a nipple shield today and it's already life changing! I'm just now realizing how much pain I was actually in the whole time.

I had same prob and used lanolin and breast milk and it healed even while bfing in two days. But my lactation consultant said if it really started bothering me to only nurse that one every other time or even give it a day break.
  • I had latch issues that causes my nipples to be sore and cracked. I saw the LC and she saved my life! She gave me a prescription for a nipple cream that's called dr.newmans nipple cream. It literally healed me in just a days time. Idk how I could have gone on without it!! Maybe it would help to ask for that? You can ask a LC or your babies pediatrican or even your OB! Also I would have your baby evulated for any tounge tie or lip ties. My daughter has lip tie (diagnosed by the ped and LC) and that also was a big reason for the pain.
  • You can pump on that breast and breast feed on the other until it heals. Just make sure you pump on schedule with the feedings. And remember the pumping should not be painful.
