Love to hear from those who've had a CVS test (or have one scheduled!)

Hi ladies,

I'm leaning towards getting a CVS test, I was going to wait until after the Harmony blood test, but that will push things back over 2 weeks (we're going away 6/2-6/9, though WHY I thought that was a good idea at the time, I have NO IDEA!) I'm 37, so AMA, Yay! Thanks to being a week ahead of schedule, since I ovulated early & was 8 weeks when they thought I'd be 7, and the OB's office not giving me clear information about genetic testing, I feel like I'm on the wire to make a decision. We want to know ASAP. I am nervous about the risks, so I'd love to hear positive stories from those of you who've had one, or reinforcement from those of you who are about to get it done. Thanks!

We are having our CVS test done next Tuesday.

We cannot use any of my blood work that goes along w/ the NT Scan due to a vanishing twin at 8w so it's basically is our only option (or amnio) if we want information.  I would rather just know sooner than later, so we scheduled the CVS.

I did have the NT scan earlier this week, but according to the counselor w/out the blood work it doesn't really tell us anything definitive.  BTW my measurements were great which was slightly reassuring.

I personally would not get it done unless there was reason to believe something was wrong with the baby - even then, I would avoid it at all costs and go the non-invasive routes (panorama/maternit21 tests, high risk a/s, etc). Just be sure to do all of your research - I have a friend that did it and she said it was awful.
  • I have not had it done, but if the screening test I have done on 6/3 comes up with something, I'll consider it. It has to be done within 10-13 weeks. Amnio is done later, like around 15/16 weeks.

I had a cvs done about a week ago. My doc had to go the abd route. While not the most pleasant part of my day, its bearable.

Thanks all! After talking it over with a family friend who is a family practitioner & was also an AMA mom, I opted to take the Harmony test (NIPT) it's 97-99% effective at diagnosing the 3 most common chromosomal abnormalities, and if that comes up questionable I can still squeeze in a CVS test before I'm 14 weeks. If I need even more reassurance, I can get an amnio a bit later on. The miscarriage risks being so much higher for CVS was what finally did it. I had a mc with my first pregnancy at 6 weeks & although I KNOW it was most likely a chromosome defect which caused it, I still kept wondering if I'd done anything to cause it. Like that tea with rosehips I didn't know I wasn't supposed to be drinking, or the electric blanket I wasn't supposed to be using, etc. It's a really hard topic to get advice on though, b/c the NIPTs haven't been around for very long, only a year or so, so no one I know has had them & there's a lot of confusion, even at my OB's office they weren't up to date on this stuff. It's so overwhelming. I really wish I could just knock back a few glasses of wine & relax! I think it's time to start yoga again! ;)

The only thing I would mention is that the Harmony and all those are only screening tests, the look for probability. The amnio and cvs are the only diagnostic

@nik6499 - I haven't had a harmony, etc test done but I thought those were "yes, no" as opposed to the odds that the NT gives you - is that not the case?

I also believed that it was a yes/no type situation. I think it pretty much is. The pamphlet I have says it evaluates "the risk for trisomies 21,18,13" with "detection rates of up to 99% & false positive rates as low as 0.1% depending on the abnormality." Apparently the false positive rate is a bit higher for 13 & 18. The result they will give you will say "aneuploidy detected or aneuploidy suspected." Obviously, if I have either of those two, I will get a CVS, which as nik6499 said, is a much more accurate, comprehensive test, but, I won't be able to get one until 6/10 at the earliest, b/c we will be out of town, and if I wait 2 more weeks I can get an amnio which is just as effective a testing tool & has a much lower risk factor. Also, if we want I can get a microarray done at the same time as the regular amnio tests.

My understanding is that a microarray looks at the whole DNA & identifies all missing & extra chromosomes, which might be too much information for me, but it's nice to have the option. For instance we have a very high rate of cancer in my family & my husband has some in his as well. The counselor said we could look for things like that. We would still have the child, but we would be as informed as possible, take precautions & be aware of the likelihood. My sister went to 3 Docs before one took her case seriously & was only given a 30% survival chance. The previous 2 told my mother that she had an eating disorder! So, I like the idea of being informed.

If we got the CVS test, they can't take a big enough sample to run two test concurrently, & would have to use the same sample for both, meaning it would be 3-4 weeks before we got all the information. I wait a little bit longer & don't worry about miscarrying b/c of it. I don't know how people wait until after the amnio to tell people, though. I'm really starting to show, especially in my chest. I'm a smaller person & have been about the same size for 15 years so it's kinda obvious no matter what I wear. I can still kind of get away with looking like I'm putting on weight, but I won't be able to fool my family, so I'm just hiding from them for now!
