Nursing bras- underwire

i know nursing bras have been discussed in the past, but I didn't see this specific question... at a breastfeeding class last week I heard you shouldn't get nursing bras with underwire. The idea being the pressure isn't good for milk production. I didn't think to ask at the time, and I will ask my doctor, but I'm wondering about opinions on this. I have friends/family who wore the underwire bc they couldn't find a bra supportive enough without. I have read that there isn't really any true scientific backing that the underwire negatively effects milk ducts. I've also heard that it is okay after your milk has begun coming in regularly but not before.

Thoughts? Suggestions? I'm overall having trouble know where to start with nursing bras!! Thanks :-)

Re: Nursing bras- underwire

  • Usually the big issue is with it causing clogged milk ducts. In the beginning, you fill up with so much milk that a bra that's stretchy and loose won't cause you to be uncomfortable. After a few weeks, the supply regulates and then most women can find the bras that they like for support and sizing. Some people never have problems with bra types, others do. It depends on your boobs! Also because I was pumping for the first 4 months, I had an oversupply which makes clogged ducts more likely to happen and mastitis (which I had twice, ouch). Babies that nurse regulate supply much better than a pump.

Check out the bravado brand bras, they were my fav in the beginning because they stretch so well!!

  • I just wore the nursing tanks for the first few weeks, but then a nursing bra with under wire. I was just told to make sure it sits flat on your ribs and not on breast tissue.
  • I used underwire when I went back to work.

You can use sports bras and just pull them up to nurse. Then wear underwire bras when they are comfortable. I wore sports bras to bed to keep my lilypadz in place.
  • I had an underwire in all of my nursing bras.  My breasts were so huge when I was nursing, I needed all the support I could get.  It didn't seem to have any effect on my supply.  I agree with the above poster that it may be a good idea to wait until you're a few weeks in...the first few weeks, I was super engorged and swollen until my body got into the swing of things.

I was a 38G when nursing my daughter. I had underwire bras and quickly realized that they do get exceptionally uncomfortable as your milk comes in. I would wear a non-nursing underwire bra when I went out with my hubbby sans baby and eventually to work (I had to take my bra off to pump anyway) but never wore one consistently. If you're concerned about support, try the Bravado Bliss. I thought it was awesome. I like having my girls "plumped up" and this bra did a better job than some of the underwire bras did.
  • If your bra fits correctly underwire will make no difference because it shouldn't be touching any breast tissue.

I nursed both of my kids for a year and never once bought a "nursing bra". My regular bras worked just fine, even for nursing in public. I never had any issues.
  • Unfortunately, unless I want them tickling my belly button I have to wear and underwire.  LOL!  I've never had any problems with it though, so maybe it's something only your body may or may not have an issue with.  I'm with @SassetteSmurfling on this one, I used my regular bras as well as nursing bras and never once had a problem.

  • I wore an underwire and it was fine
  • Went to Motherhood today to buy new bras. I was so disappointed! The sales girl didn't do a fitting, just gave me a handful of sizes. Nothing fit correctly and there were no pretty ones :( I'm feeling so discouraged. That's the only maternity store in town and they were no help. Any suggestions?
  • I wore underwire one time and ended up with some very bad clogged milk ducts that were excruciating. I went to target and bought some normal bras without underwire that I just pull down to nurse in. They worked far better then any nursing bras I owned.

I only ever got target ones and they worked great for me. It does suck that when you aren't pregnant you can go to boutiques and get fitted and feel confident and then you get pregnant/are nursing and there's no one there to help!

  • I got a couple nursing bras from Motherhood Maternity. I'm a big fan of the "tshirt" bras, no wires, similar to a sports bra. They're comfortable.
  • I had two sleep nursing bras from target that I lived in for the first few weeks. I had one underwire nursing bra from target that was extremely uncomfortable so I never wore it. After the first few weeks, I wore regular underwire bras and just pulled down the cups to nurse. They were comfortable and supportive!
