Found a pediatrician...

Re: Found a pediatrician...

  • Wait.. One question, why do the babies need separate scales? What was the reasoning behind that? I breastfed my first for over a year but I've never thought about her scale at the pediatrician?

  • Don't feel bad. DH and I never have questions. We usually educate ourselves on everything that seems important to us. Also in my town you just show up one day, ask for a paper, fill it out, and bam you're with that pediatrician. No interviews, nothing.
  • These people (the other families, and the office in general) sound stuck up. I know this office meets the criteria you were looking for, but honestly I wouldn't want to go somewhere where I feel like I am being judged for my (normal) life choices. The only questions I had for my peds office was 'what do I do after hours' and 'what is the general rate of vaccination compliance'. I mean, I'm in a small town so I don't have much choice at all, its pretty much this lady or a family practice doc, but if I had that experience and had other peds options I'd go somewhere else. Maybe there is something in your list of requirements you're willing to compromise on to have a place less snooty. Example, since I have no choice in peds offices I have to just make do with office hours 8-5, no weekends, and urgent care otherwise. So maybe you could deal with a place that has less hours or something

  • @MrsWilson830 hey, at least you went to your pediatrician's info session! DH and I didn't even do that. We chose someone based on recommendations from parents at our church - they all gave this office glowing reviews, one said the doctors had even showed up at the office at 2AM to help their sick kid. This is the kind of doctor I want caring for my child, and that's not the kind of feedback you get at an info session! I did call to make sure they had a lactation consultant (they have 3) but that's the extent of my research. So - you have put way more effort into your search than I have! Don't let those other parents make you feel bad, you're doing great!

  • The main one in my town is more concerned with what insurance you carry rather than anything else. Although I did pick the main guy in our town who has been practicing the longest. I went to elementary school with his son. They don't ask you to fill out paperwork until after the baby is born, which I found odd. So I feel a little uneasy about all of it but if I don't like him I can always switch.
  • We had a pediatrician speaker at one of my classes and I liked him so I chose him. It was as simple as that. People who get all crazy with interviews and questions and stuff... I find it a little weird. There is so much drama in the parenting world. I hate it already!
  • The other parents were probably talking about the breastfed baby growth chart not the actual scale they are weighed on. I don't know if it is an American thing to interview pediatricians but I don't know anyone who interviewed a pediatrician before birth. Asking for a recommendation from friends who are like minded is about as close to an interview as I have heard of. Don't worry, most of parenting is learned on the fly :)

  • I'm horrible and just used the on call pediatrician at the hospital. Ended up liking him so we have stuck with him. And honestly, we only see him for well child and maybe once/twice a year when our kids get sick. If we weren't having another, I'd probably move my kids over to my family Dr. And I agree, we have to see specialists bc of my sons autoimmune disease and we rarely talk to the Ped about it. It's mostly our Ped GI and Ped Allergist who make the game plan and cc the Pediatrician.

I picked a family physician the same one I go to...... And he also does a mean circumcision. Which is important to me because I have to help with them and see the good and the bad.
I picked family practice also because our peds are so busy you have to see a PA or NP and not the actual doc....
Something to consider..... How big their practice is.... And do you mind if your kid is sick getting pushed off to an NP or PA. Nothing against them but these particular ones are dumb .... :)
  • I had a whole plan (as a FTM) to check out 3 practices. But we went to an open house at the first one, liked them enough and stopped there. I realized it's not worth spending more time on and you can always switch! The docs seem good, hours and location are fab, so I'm all set.
  • I picked an office based on Google reviews and they put DS with a pedi. I never met him until he visited us in the hospital! I figured if I didn't like him I could switch.

Hey hey...don't knock the NPs ;) but I shouldn't be talking bc Id want my child to see the pediatrician....hypocritical....maybe lol. Unless the NP was really awesome. No to pediatric PAs for me. They just don't get enough experience/training IMO. But my practice doesn't even have NPs actually.

  • I never interviewed anyone before we went into the hospital with DD I just went with the hospital recommended pediatrician in our area and I love them!  I recommend them to anyone moving into the area with kids because they are very flexible, have walk in hours in the morning and if I call with a concern about DD they are almost always able to see her same day because they have late hours too which is a must for working moms!  Sounds like I lucked out because I went in totally un-prepared haha

I only went to one. Liked her and I'm going with it. I was totally unprepared too! You guys are fine!
  • My pedi came recommended by my midwife along with a list of others. As PP mentioned, they care more about whether or not you have insurance & I happened to interview him only because he agreed to give me my TDAP. I didn't have a list of questions but mostly relied heavily on reviews on Yelp and Google.

Don't let other people's looks of judgement have any affect on you. It's their problem not yours. Best of luck to you!

I love NP's ! I just don't love the ones they have at our peds office. They have trouble hiring good ones. @jesshrou

We have a lot of NPs in my area that go thru a program where you don't have to be a nurse before and its mind blowing it's allowed. Those are scary.

I never went to an info session or an interview. I chose my pediatrician because he cared for me when I was a child and I always liked him. I just called his office and the receptionist said to just call when the baby is born to set up her first appointment.

    Same here.
  • F those people. Seriously. And anyone who ever makes you doubt yourself - unless it is in a productive way that motivates you to research or work harder or whatever. But that's not happening in this case. So F those people.

You will be a great mom. I've seen your posts. Just because you had nothing to prove at an info session doesn't mean you're not ready. And just because I'm probably also 10 years older than you does not mean I'm ready. You've got this! Don't give those jerks permission to make you feel anything but excited to be the chill parents in the room.
  • Don't feel bad. We went to a few but didn't have a list of questions either and I'm 37 weeks too! We'll probably just go to the practice that I went to as a kid. I'm going to formula feed too (as I was and I turned out pretty normal...lol) some of the parents looked at me weird but like you I don't give a flying you know what!
