June 2015 Moms

Running outta hope for my VBAC

I posted on the VBAC board but it's seems no one is ever there, so I thought maybe if some of you June mama's have had a VBAC or are hoping for one might provide some insight

So I'm 37.5 weeks into this pregnancy and I know things are different for everyone and every pregnancy is different... But Im starting to think this pregnancy is going to end into a RCS.

Today at my apt I had another internal today to see if I made any progress and I'm still closed and not softened at all. The doc said that typically with 2nd plus pregnancies that by now most moms are at least soft a little and starting to dilate. He said since I didn't progress with my first pregnancy that there is a larger chance that I may not progress this time around (especially if I go past by due date) and it's kind of making me feel like my chances at this VBAC are getting slimmer and slimmer.

I had a decent CS recovery last time (due to failed induction and failure to progress) but I just don't wanna have major surgery again, especially not with a toddler. And with my CS last time I kinda feel like I missed out on her birth bc I was out of it for a little while. Then I had to recover in a room by myself and didn't see the babe for almost five hours after she was born.

Someone tell me there is still hope and that I'm just reading into what my doctor is saying and the baby could still come on his/her own and i might be able to avoid another CS lol

  • No experience but hoping you get your vbac!

I'm trying for a VBAC too. My first was an emergency csection at 34 weeks due to low fluid and DD's slow heart rate. I'm 38w1d and am not showing any signs either. My OBGYN said I was high and not dilated at all today (first internal check ever). She didn't say anything about a RCS at all. Just reminded me that I cannot be induced. I take that as there's still hope for me!
  • No experience with VBAC - but as for a c-section, your experience could be completely different with a scheduled CS. I had DD at 36 weeks due to low fluid and atypical pre-eclampsia, and I had a great CS experience. I had a spinal for anesthesia, and I was alert and conscious the entire time. DH got to bring LO over to me as soon as she was cleared by the NICU doctor - he put her on my chest and I got to hold her with my arms right there in the OR as they finished suturing me up. DH carried her to recovery with me, and I got to breastfeed in the recovery area and do skin to skin. I was very apprehensive about my CS as well - so I hope this at least puts you somewhat at ease if you need a RCS

Cannot be induced?! That's interesting. We induce vbacs. The pitocin never goes above 10 mu/min and surgery has to be in house and on standby. That's sad they won't even give you a choice! @amabarne
  • I'm confused.. I didn't see where the doc said they won't induce you? There is still hope, and I would discuss induction options.. VBAC inductions are very often successful, just because last time it wasn't try not to focus on that .. Good luck

@HayesRN13 . I was talking to @amabarne she said that her doc will not induce her and she's hoping for a vbac.

I should of put her name first. But I put it at the end!
  • Well something to think about....doctors get paid the same for a scheduled section as someone who was induced, labored for two difficult days and had a very difficult vaginal delivery...
  • No that was my lazy bad for not completely reading through the thread
  • I'm in the same position as you. Induction (3 days past due date and low fluid) with no progress past 6 cm 5 years ago, led to c section. 36.5 weeks pregnant now and also am hoping for VBAC. My doctors have pretty much all said that I have a 50/50 chance or VBAC and they won't induce, also will probably let me go to 41 weeks. I go on Friday for first internal so maybe something will be going on! Hope some others have experience, I haven't found anything on the VBAC board either..

I asked for a natural birth so I never questioned why I couldn't be induced. I don't really care to know why. I've done some research about VBACs and came to the conclusion that it's safer for my own body to do the work on its own schedule. I may ask after the fact :) I do know that I have to be continuously monitored and surgery does have to be notified that I'm there and ready to go just in case.
  • My cousin just had a successful induced VBAC. She had to fight for it, but she did her own research and presented it to her OB and they basically didn't have a leg to stand on. Something like being induced only raises the chance of uterin rupture by 0.5%. Just passing that along, it can be done!

Whoa.  Why didn't you see your baby for 5 hours?  That's absurd.  I had a CS with my first and had her in my arms right away... she went with my husband to the room as they stitched me up...then I had her back with me 20 minutes later.  If you do end up with a RCS... demand that baby.  Ridiculious!

  • Just so everyone knows, it's worth looking up the laws in your state to see what your rights are as far as VBAC vs. RCS go. I know where I am a woman cannot legally be forced into surgery (as long as she hasn't already given consent by signing the paperwork giving doctors the go ahead to make the call on their own), not even for a VBAC. It's major surgery and the risks and recovery get more intense each time around, so if you want to things naturally don't be afraid to stand up for yourself. Just make sure you know where you stand legally and don't sign any paperwork without reading every word of it (and you can modify the terms of your agreement should you choose to sign).
  • I had a c-section with DS after a failed induction (my water broke at 39 weeks). I'm also hoping for a VBAC. I recently switched doctors because my first doctor wasn't as comfortable with VBACs, and made it seem impossible to induce VBAC women. My new OB is much more comfortable with VBACs and does not have a problem inducing someone who is trying for a VBAC, she just said, they monitor a little more closely and they won't push the uterus as much as if you had not previously had a c-section. She also said, that while uterine rupture (while rare) is not a great thing to have happen, it's not something to be suuuuper nervous about so long as you are in a hospital and being monitored closely. She said, "we would know right away that it has happened and we would be set and ready to repair".

She made me feel much more at ease about everything. Fingers crossed that you have the VBAC experience you hope for!

  • I'm debating if I should go for a VBAC if I go into labor before my scheduled csection
  • I tried for a VBAC last time around. Unfortunately it ended up in a csection--my bladder tore and it was a little scary for a bit.

That being said I am really glad I tried for the vbac. I would have always wondered if it would have happened or if I could have done it.

I can't do a vba2c this time so it is a scheduled csection. I am a little bummed but feel much more at ease than I did last time.

My only advice is be at peace with whatever happens. You can control a lot but can't control it all and being ok with whatever happens is the best attitude to have.

    Good luck!

  • Due to family history as well as my own experience with DS1 I opted to go with a scheduled C-section, never wanted a VBAC after my experience. I don't feel that I am missing much and have discussed things at length with my OB, so I still feel I have control over some things (delayed cord clamping, almost immediate skin to skin, spinal, etc.) I had an internal 2 days ago and from what she can tell I am still closed, which makes me feel a little relieved.  While I don't want another major surgery, I feel it is the best decision for me and my family...my biggest gripe is that I can't get my tubes tied while she has me open...we know we are only having 2 so we'll have to go with another option down the line for permanent BC.

  • @mamayo26 Why can't you have a tubal? Are you delivering at a religious hospital?
  • Just saw my doctor today. Feel very annoyed. She said I have a low chance of success since last time I stopped at 6 cm. and if I don't go into labor by 40 weeks they will schedule c section. I am not scheduling anything unless it is necessary especially if I'm just 40 weeks.. Just hoping I go into labor myself before June 13th
  • @laurendutch yep...it is the only hospital my OB has rights at...I could petition them, but being that I asked so late/they only meet once a month and they usually only approve if it is "medically necessary" I'm not going to go through the hassle and we will figure something else out in a couple months to see what is best for us.

I may go back on oral BC after I am done breastfeeding just for the hormonal stability to help with acne...i though I was supposed to be done with acne...I'm over 30 when will it end!

I'm a FTM and I have no advice to offer but I did want to share a good video (About 16 min) about CS and VBACs in the states.

I hope you're able to come to the most informed and safe conclusion for your situation and for all other moms on this board, STM as well as FTM.
