Mastitis

Anyone here get mastitis that went away on its own?
I had flu symptoms and redness/pain that comes with mastitis that has been decreasing for a week but not quite gone. Just wondering if anyone else has had this before and been able to fight it off on their own?

Re: Mastitis

  • I think I had a clogged duct, but not mastitis. I had a high fever and chills for a couple days. My breast was sore and hard in one spot too. I called my OB and she to take 600 mg of Motrin every 6 hours. Did the trick! I also nursed and pumped the plugged side and took a hot shower and massaged the sore area, of course.

Best of luck fighting it off. Wouldn't hurt to call your OB if you haven't already.

  • Just started my symptoms today so I will update if it goes away without treatment. For now, lots of warm compresses, nursing and pumping, and Tylenol or Motrin.
  • I had Mastitis a couple weeks ago and man was it painful!!! It started to go away at first, or so I thought. So I just let it go, and then I ended up having to go to the urgent care because the pain became unbearable. Antibiotics is what got rid of it for me, but I'm not breastfeeding. Hopefully yours goes away, but if not don't hesitate to call your Dr. Good luck!

Thanks everyone. I think I did fight it of on my own but then got some bad advice from people in my life that you can't fight mastitis off on your own and I doubted myself. I ended up taking cephalexin even though my chills and feverish symptoms were gone. I feel terrible that I exposed my little one to antibiotics at 10 wks when I probably didn't need them :( I know there are much worse things that coul happen but it's hard not to feel like a terrible ftm.
  • I had mastitis multiple times (about 8!) w my first. Working full time, lots of pumping. Had to take antibiotics three times (which I would recommend to anyone w fever! I let my first episode go too long and nearly landed in the hospital!). Multiple lifestyle modifications helped (bra change (seamless), no seatbelt across breasts, regular schedule, increased hydration, dec caffeine, empty full breast before changing - even if nursing one breast all day!). Lecithin capsules also helped - thins milk. Its natural sunflower oil. Did not have an episode after starting that. Now nursing my second boy - so far so good!
  • My little episode did go away on its own with home treatment, but it really only lasted one day with a fever. If it would have gone to day two, I also would have called my doctor. I had pain for about three days afterwards, but no fever. Mastitis generally does require antibiotics, so it is certainly not something to feel guilty about. I think mine came from a few days of overdoing it, wearing bras with underwire for a free days in a row, a also fighting a cold at around the same time.
