Swollen Hands and Feet

This morning I almost cried because I had to force my wedding bands on. My fingers were swollen! I am only able to wear one of the rings. I'm only 18 weeks and can't imagine the next few weeks. My feet also feel swollen at times. Is it normal to be swollen this early in the pregnancy? At least I feel it is too early lol.

Re: Swollen Hands and Feet

  • Yesterday I noticed that my rings are getting too tight. I'm dreading having to take them off and not wear them till my kid is a few weeks old! :-/ I literally never take off my rings, so it feels odd to not wear them.

Ugh, I have a ring which I basically never take off; I didn't realize it was tighter than usual till I tried to remove it just now. I say "tried" because it was uncomfortable (almost painful) to try to remove it, so I left that dang thang on. Damn...and I thought it was just me feets :((

  • Yes it's totally normal. I went for a walk the other day and by the end my hands were noticeably swollen. My husband said, "hey, nice sausage fingers." He's a gem :)

  • When you're in your feet a lot it's normal for your feet to swell a little and my hands always swell if I go for a walk pregnant or not,but not much and it shouldn't stay.
It's definitely something to keep an eye in since it's early for that stuff. With my first I didn't have any swelling until the last month of my pregnancy.
Low sodium diet and drink lots of water!

My son is about to turn a year old and my engagement ring still doesn't fit:( my wedding band fits, but it's very upsetting!
  • The weather has been so nice lately, I've only worn sandals for weeks. But today is pouring rain and I'm wearing shoes for the first time in a while. They feel much tighter than normal but my feet don't look swollen. It's not uncomfortable, just noticeable. I'm guessing it's normal?

My doc says its normal..and to elevate my feet above my heart when possible. I get serious cankles when im on my feet more than a few hours.
  • My feet have started to swell as well, and during the night my hands will go numb and tingly until I hang them over the bed !
  • By the end of today both my feet were swollen but my left was so tight it hurt! I think our bipolar weather had something to do with it. Although I haven't worn my ring in a couple months because it was getting uncomfortable and I would be devastated if I had to cut it off.
  • Water pills helped me - my feet were so swollen my skin was bruising and I could hardly walk by 17 wks and elevating my feet, changing position, etc, did nothing to help at all. They cleared it up 100%. If it continues or is interfering with your ability to do things like work you might want to ask your doctor about it as they're a pregnancy cat B which means you can be prescribed them during pregnancy.
  • Lots of water for sure. I also used cold wraps on my ankles. Felt great.  They are supposed to be for the wrist but worked great for my cankles.  Not sure how they would do for the fingers but I assume getting the swelling down it the wrist helps the blood flow through more freely, in turn helping the fingers as well.  The site I bought from, worth a look into at least.

  • By the end of the day, it's fairly normal, but if you wake up that way, it can signify an imbalance. Increased carbohydrate and sodium can both (together and individually) do that to you, and even when you drink plenty of water, you'll hold onto more of it in your cells. Monitor what you're eating within the last 2-3 hours before bed. If it's higher in sodium or carbohydrate, see how your body reacts when you make a change to that. If it isn't related to that, it can also be a sign of water intake imbalance. It's really common for pregnant women to retain more water on a regular basis than non-pregnant people, so in the end, do what you can but know that it'll happen to us all at one time or another! I especially swelled near the final weeks with DD, and I'm sure I will again!

  • OMG me too! The other night, I fell asleep on the couch sitting up. When I woke, my ankles were so swollen it hurt to stand. Then by the end of that day, swollen again! So it begins!! So far so good today lol!
