Clogged/infected milk duct

I woke up last night to feed Emmett and my breast was very engorged and lumpy. Around the same time I started feeling very achy and just all around not good. Everything that I'm reading says that's normal for a clogged or a infected milk duct. As long as I don't get a high fever to get plenty of rest and fluids along with breast feeding regularly and it will go away on its own.
Anyone have an experience with this?

I did when baby was about 2 wks old. I used a heating pad and pumped extra on that side. I also massaged while pumping/feeding. It resolved in about 3 days?

    Not comfortable- good luck!

  • I would go to the doctor.. Mastitis works quickly and it doesn't take long for the fever to happen. The quicker you start taking antibiotics the less severe/ shorten duration it seems ( for me anyway).
  • Ok so totally dumb question, do I call my family dr or my obgyn that delivered my son?

I think it depends. My pediatrician has lactation specialists on staff so I've been working with them. I've been having similar problems with engorgement and too much milk supply and found that gently massaging the breast while feeding has really helped to unclog the ducts before they get too bad. Good luck- it really is painful
  • I always called my family doctor, you could probably do either. She seemed to take it very seriously each time. I do remember I left it once hoping that just continuing to feed and some warm compresses and Tylenol would help... By ten pm that night I had a fever of 103 and felt like absolute garbage. My doctor always sent me to the hospital with orders for IV meds every two hours for a few days. Once I went to a clinic and he gave me oral antibiotics, by Monday when I was able to follow up with my family doctor I had an abscess and had to be admitted for a week. It was completely exhausting with a newborn. I hope it resolves quickly for you!
  • I think it would be fine for either. I went to my ob because I had a fever and the discharge papers from the hospital said to call the ob with in a certain time period if you got a fever
  • I had this happen and massaged my breast in a very hot bath and got it to unclog. It felt better right away and the soreness was gone in about 24 hours

Pump/nurse, massage and self express while using a heating pad/showers/baths really help unclog the duct. Massaging can hurt like a bitch. You should call your doctor if your not really feeling that will. A clogged duct will just feel painful and lumpy.

  • This is the only thing that unclogs my ducts.

  • Did anyone else feel achy when they were clogged? I'm getting progressively worse, now I have the chills, but no fever. If I would have felt this bad earlier I would have called my dr but now he's closed so my only option is the ER or wait it out till tomorrow when my dr reopens.
  • It will definitely make you feel achy and chills... Basically flu like symptoms.
  • Thanks for all the help guys! I should have called my dr today but was dumb and didn't so it looks like it's going to be a rough night for me but I'm falling first thing in the morning! I don't wish this on anyone :(
