More wet diapers and only one or two dirty

We saw the pediatrician yesterday because our three week old has been having 12+ wet diapers a day and only 1 or 2 dirty.  She's gaining weight and seems to look good otherwise and the pediatrician told us the diaper thing is totally normal, but i never asked WHY the change. Anyone else? It just sort of freaks me out. :((She gets formula and breast milk.) I caught a urine sample in a cup because I'm trying to avoid a cath to rule out a uti. Dr said urine looked like normal urine just looking at it and no fever or big change in feeding.

  • I don't understand your question. Why the change in what?

  • Sorry.

The change from having a mix of dirty diapers and wet ones. Now she basically only has wet diapers and maybe one dirty a day. My sister-in-law has a baby four weeks older than ours and hasn't noticed any such change.

Our daughter is 2 weeks old and has 8-12 wet diapers a day. She absolutely HATES wet diapers even if it's just a little plus we don't want her to have diaper rash. Babies are supposed to have 6 soaked diapers a day, so you (like us) are probably changing your baby more frequently. Totally normal. It's also normal for breastfed babies to not have a BM for up to 10 days.
  • Thanks for sharing! Yes, she HATES being wet!

She's also so gassy. I feel so bad for her.
  • As long as she's having bowel movements everything should be fine. All babies are different. Some don't care about being wet, some will flip out over it - so you are probably just changing her more frequently based on that. I'd trust the Pedi knows what is going on. DD was pretty gassy as a newborn, too. When it got to be painful for her I would rub her stomach, or lay a warming pad to help relieve some of the discomfort.

@ladyteach0505 Gripe water works wonders for gassy babies. We also use Dr. Brown bottles.
  • I'm hoping one BM a day really is enough.

It's stressful to know what's normal and not.

My doctor said it's totally normal for breastfed babies to have fewer BMs. I was concerned about it too. Wet diapers are most important.

I was told as they get older they start storing nutrients and fat you are providing so less needs to leave the body. Your body changes what is in your milk depending on what stage of life your LO is on
  • My lo is 2 1/2 weeks old, ebf, and I have noticed the same thing. It had me worried but we don't have an appointment until the first week in June so I'm glad you brought this up. He is only having 2 dirty diapers and lots of filled wet diapers whereas he used to have mixed diapers 4 or 5 times a day. I thought it might've been something I was eating that was irritating him.
  • My daughter has only had one bm a day since she was born. Tons of wet diapers though. I was concerned because my son used to have bm's all the time. I would change him and he would already be going! My ped wasn't concerned at all. She said consider yourself lucky.

  • I'm going on baby number 4 and it totally normal!!!
It's just one if those things, wet diapers, at this point are far more important.
