Milk

Anyone have a breast reduction and still get milk?

Re: Milk

  • No personal experience, but this site has some good information for you. https://www.bfar.org/reduction.shtml

There are also lots of threads on different BMBs where moms talked about their personal experiences with it if you use the search bar. Some of them are pretty old, but it could still give you some good information.

  • I had one about 16 years ago.  Being induced Monday.  I did check out that site too, but my lactation consultant did have some different advice from women there, the main one being DON'T use a pump - let baby feed all she wants since that brings in your milk far better than a pump.

On a good note, I was able to express a couple of drops of colostrum yesterday from both breasts (I've been checking).  I'll check in again after the baby's born.  On a positive note, my OB said they had two women fully bf'ing at the clinic, no supplementing necessary.

Basically, it depends a lot on the type of surgery, and the length of time it happened if everything has had a chance to recover/heal fully like nerves and the actually tissues that produce milk.
  • Not sure if this is the reason, but I have implants and never produced enough milk for either kid. I was assured I could prior to surgery but alas, no milk.
  • I had a friend that had a reduction and is still breast feeding at one year :)
