Is it safe to paint during Pregnancy?

Hello Mammas! I have an itch to paint my house... Rec room, bathrooms and of course prepare our nursery for baby's arrival! Do any of you know if it's safe to paint? I know that Benjamin Moore sells a non-toxic, fume-free paint just don't want to take any risks that could harm baby.

Re: Is it safe to paint during Pregnancy?

  • Most paints are low VOCs and as long as you are in a ventilated area you should be good. Take breaks and open the windows and you're fine.

  • I agree with pp also plan to take lots of breaks and drink lots of water so you don't dehydrate and know up front that any project you take on will take twice as long.

I just painted my bathroom with the aura brand from Benjamin Moore. I asked the associate and she said all their paints are very green and regulated. If ventilated, I'd be fine! I noticed at times I needed a fume break but I think that's normal for anyone!

I also painted my son's room while pregnant with him and he is just fine :)
  • My OB says it's safe. I agree with everyone else on ventilated. Also, I had a friend who was still worried and decided to wear a mask so that's an option too.
  • Also to kill the paint smell add a few teaspoons of vanilla extract! It doesn't change the color and it takes away the strong odor :)
  • Just painted our entire new house with Behr brand paint. My doctor said it was safe. Paint nowadays don't smell as bad as I remember it as a kid.

  • I painted with my first and will probably with this one too. Keep windows open and just be smart about it.

  • If I were you I'd go with the benjamin moore natura line you mentioned, if you are worried. It's odor less which is nice. But still keep it ventilated and take breaks ... or hire someone :)
