Paraguard IUD

Does anyone have this non-hormonal IUD? Have you had issues with heavy bleeding/cramping at all with it yet? I filled out a prior-auth form at my dr's office this morning for it and they "had to advise me" that there's a risk of really heavy bleeding and longer cycles on it... I just wanted to stay away from any hormones that might make me feel crazy so that's why I'm wanting to go with this one.. But now I'm super nervous and hope I'm making the right choice??

Re: Paraguard IUD

  • I just had Mirena put in, my dr recommended it over Paragard, which is what I originally wanted. Mirena is a different hormone than birth control pills/shot/whatever. It's localized to your abdomen also. It doesn't work or affect you like pills or the shot would. I have had tons of problems with the shot and the pill but so far are doing great with the Mirena iud. My mom has the Paragard and has awful periods, she never did before.

  • I also had Mirena put in a few weeks ago. I have been bleeding ever since, but not many cramps. The bleeding started out light, then got heavy for a couple weeks... Now it's very very light at 3 weeks out. I also feel an occasional poke from the strings. My husband felt it once during sex, but it was brief and felt like a little pinch. They said if we can get through the first 2-3 months of unexpected spotting and cramping, it's very worth it in the long run. We'll see!

@Chuggles1013 oh man.. You might've solidified my fears of the paraguard.. I really don't want crazy heavy bleeding!

@gdamore11 have you felt mood swings or anything on it? Just curious how different people have reacted to the mirena..
  • I don't feel any different other than the annoying bleeding and occasional poke. The hormone levels are much much lower than the pill because it's going right to the source, instead of being digested first.

I had the non-hormonal IUD for five years before I got pregnant and it was awesome! No mood swings and spontaneous sex! Yes, for the first six months I had stronger cramps, heavier bleeding and a longer periods but for me it was still a good trade off. That said before I had the IUD I had very light, three day periods and no cramping so going to five days wasn't terrible. After about six months to a year I gradually started to have lighter bleeding and less cramps till I was back to my 3-4 day flow. I'm sensitive to hormones so for me this was a great option and I'm planning to go back to it soon. (Since delivery we've old school and bought a box of condoms. Wow I forgot how much having to use them sucks!)
  • I had more a for 7 years and ended up hating it! The hormones drive me crazy! I'm getting para guard if rather have a little more bleeding once a month than years of being on a hormonal rage lol. But everyone is different!
  • I just had the paraguard put in today. I don't know if the doctor was just rough, but it hurt! I cramped for about an hour after it. But I feel fine now. Still bleeding from it being put in though. I'm breastfeeding, so I'm curious if I will get a period lol.
