I can't move my head

Ok ladies I'm currently 13+3, for the last couple days my neck has been really sore. But today I woke up and could barely turn my head. I've tried Tylenol, heat and ice. Nothing seems to work and I'm starting to get worried. I've checked online and haven't found anything. I've had a stiff neck before, but not like this. Wondering if this is a pregnant thing or should I be worried? Any suggestions?

Re: I can't move my head

  • You may just be sleeping on it awkwardly or carrying your stress in your neck/shoulders.  If possible maybe get someone to massage the area and try to adjust your sleep position.

  • I would go to a chiropractor. About 6 months ago that happened to me. I could not move and it was hard to do anything. Mine was a cause of car accident from years ago and is now causing problems. My chiropractor is amazing and helped me with my neck and back problems.
  • I get really bad muscle tension that keeps me from moving my head to the right when it flares. I got a massage and they focused on that area and it didn't bother me for over a year. I went to culinary school so a lot of tone hunched over a knife concentrating.
  • This has been a major problem for me this pregnancy. A massage helps, as does a heating pad, but I eventually had to buy a memory foam pillow specifically for neck and back pain. It took awhile to get used to it while sleeping but it made a world of difference, and the nights I don't use it, I can tell a big difference in my neck pain.

I get muscle spasms in my neck/shoulder from time to time (always on the left side), and it's excruciating to try to turn my head past a certain spot.  If that's what it is, there's really not much you can do besides gentle stretches and waiting for it to work itself out.
  • This same thing happened to me around 12 weeks.  It took about a week for everything to go back to normal but for the first few days I was in a lot of pain.  I just assumed I slept wrong but it was strange bc the pain was so high in the back of my neck.  Needless to say it is gone now!

that's really promising to hear, I bought a heating pad, some bengay and took off the next couple days. Hope the pain will go away about time I get back to work.

I second the chiropractor suggestion. Sometimes the bones being out of alignment can cause the muscles to spasm.

I had really bad pain in my neck and back last year, and could barely turn my head as well. I figured I had slept weird, but over-the-counter medicine wasn't cutting it. So I made an appointment with my chiro, and it made a world of difference. I had to go back a few times, but after each adjustment, I could feel a noticeable improvement. :)

  • Totally go the chiropractor route. Some don't recommend heat depending on the cause of your problem. Usually after your initial chiro visit, you can get massage covered by your insurance (if they cover chiro). I go biweekly for a massage and adjustment and it costs $29 because of insurance. It helps so much with tension headaches and neck stiffness! Good luck!
  • OMGosh! That happened to me at about 12 weeks. It was mind boggling to me. Tylenol didn't do s thing and it took exactly a week and it was gone. I was debating dr the whole time but wasn't sure if I had slept on it wrong. How weird!
  • I hope it gets better for you!

I used a heating pad as well (even brought it to bed with me) and it seemed to help. After a few days the pain seemed to move down towards my shoulders and eventually I felt it in my shoulders. Then the pain was gone!

@MoonUnitNugget what you described is exactly what happened for me. At first it was high enough where I'm like could I have a bad tooth??? But I knew nothing looked like it and an actual tooth never hurt. Than it went down some more and I though oh maybe an ear infection but my ear didn't hurt lol than it went to my neck all the while it was traveling downward it was getting less painful. So odd.

A heating pad on your neck may help loosen up the tension in it. Make sure when you sleep your neck isn't cranked to one side
  • I think we are getting to the point in our pregnancy where our hips are starting to shift a bit. Everything is connected of course so a misalignment could cause neck and shoulder pain as well.

Heat would be for muscle pain, I'd go to a chiropractor! I just said this On another thread but it was totally the best decision I made in a long time. I'm physically feeling great this pregnancy due to regular adjustments.
