I am not against whatever women want to do. But the title of this thread alone makes me vomit in my mouth a little. So here is my feeling: Ugh, we are going to have to see this on the first page for some time to come, aren't we? Couldn't Google have done the trick on this?
Sorry, lady. Hope you get the benefits you want out of it. :-&
You might consider XPing this on the Natural Birth Board, I know there are ladies over there who have done it or had it encapsulated.
I was fortunate that I never struggled with PPD or low milk supply. Had I struggled I would have considered having it encapsulated. I probably wouldn't be brave enough to blend it up into a smoothie, but that's supposed to be the best way. Check with your hospital, some won't let you take it and others have certain rules about it.
I know people who do this and to each his own but...gross. I'm don't eat organ meat from animals, let alone one I grew myself. Sorry, that's too much for me.
I kid, I kid. My doula is big fan of placenta products for mom's health and well- being. I personally like to see the clinical evidence before doing that. However, I must say there seems to be far more palatable ways to consume the placenta rather than a smoothie! No judgement, to each her own, but blended organ is not for me! Have you heard of encapsulation?
No, would you eat any other body part? Do you also drink your own blood or baby urine? Just because you can doesn't mean you should. The purpose of the placenta was to nourish the baby, once the baby is here it should be buried or burned like any other body part that you no longer need. There are other ways to get vitamins.
I grew up on a farm watching animals eat this and we do eat organ meats (super nutritional) so it doesn't actually gross me out. I couldn't make it myself though and DH was a resounding no when I checked with him
That's disgusting. I will never understand this whole eating the placenta business. No thank you! Have you actually seen a placenta? Because I have. Nope. Not. Ever.
I'm encapsulating it. I just moved states, no family here, & missing my mother so if I can help avoid PPD, I will. Some say it's a placebo but every midwife & doula I've spoken to have nothing negative to say. Not to mention, the dip in estrogen post baby can cause hair loss...no thanks. Proven or unproven about its benefits, it doesn't hurt to try.
I too am having it encapsulated to take. my doula and midwife both recommend it. I've also talked to mom's who have taken it and had good experiences. I have a history of depression so it can't hurt to try it. (But I definitely couldn't do the smoothie )
No smoothie for me, but I am strongly considering encapsulation. My hospital has no issues with it and neither does my midwife. I lurked a little on the PPD boards, and it scared me to death! These women are going through some real struggles and if taking a little pill could somehow help me avoid that, I'm all for it. Can't hurt.
I am doing the capsules. My Chiro who specializes in pregnant ladies and kids had great things to say based on feedback from all his clients. My doula does this too so handy.
I'll do it when there's scientific evidence to back it up, but at the moment it seems to be purely based on anecdote. The idea of eating it/drinking it in a smoothie just skeeves me out and I'm wary of the idea of encapsulation after reading some reports of dubious hygiene practices such as not thoroughly cleaning equipment between placentas.
The smoothie thing isn't appealing to me, but we'll do raw/dehydration encapsulation again. We are also having a tincture made. It was incredible post-partum last time and also very helpful for PMS symptoms once AF returned. DH noticed such a benefit that he would (kindly) ask if I'd taken them if I was unduly moody or lethargic. Usually he was right on target that I had forgotten.
I woke up this morning gagging because I saw this thread again.... OP have you ever seen a placenta?!?!? I was in the room last night when my nephew was born and all I could think of is people who eat that... Especially raw... Are gross!!!!
Re: placenta smoothie
I feel that this placenta business will pass...... At some point.
Just my opinion.
Sorry, lady. Hope you get the benefits you want out of it.
