What music will you listen to during labor?

I've put a lot of thought in to this, as music is a huge part of my life. For the past twenty years (man, that makes me feel old :) ), Phish has been my favorite band. I know for sure that I will be incorporating their music in to this huge moment in my life, although I am still unsure what by them I'll be listening to. How about you ladies? Have you put any thought in to this, and if so, what are you thinking? Curious to hear everyone else's thoughts!

Re: What music will you listen to during labor?

  • I've thought about that too! I wasn't sure they would let me listen to music in the delivery room actually. I hope they do. I feel silly saying this but 80s music really gets me motivated at the gym so I might do 80s Pandora during labor.
  • Loading the player...
  • I plan on a really random playlist of 90's boy bands, Brittany spears, maybe some five finger death punch, nothing more, goo goo dolls, and whatever else makes me happy. It will be eclectic but hopefully take my mind off of the pain!
  • I'm going the chill route.. Beck's album Morning Phase, some Bon Iver.

My hubs is a big Phish fan too (he's got tickets to the NY weekend in August, seeing as I will be about 7 months preg, bowing out for a beach trip with my parents instead), "Waste" was our first song at our wedding.  My labor went too fast (not complaining!) for us to put on any music, but I was so happy to have our ipod at the hospital.  I remember listening to a lot of old standards, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Nat King Cole while we were in the room after our son was born, it was really nice and happy music.  Haven't found a mood for this baby yet, we'll see as we get closer.
You'll be feeling "bouncing 'round the womb" pretty soon.  Sorry.
  • @thefithuntress Morning Phase is one of my favorite albums of all time! Good call!

  • @thefithuntress I love your signature gif, but I can't help but think, "Stop trying to make fetch happen!" each time I see it.  lol.

  • @Falchas love the pun! Literally laughed out loud-so thanks for that. I tried to talk my husband in to the festival in Glen's Falls, and he laughed at me! We are going down to Merriweather as a compromise! Waste is a beautiful song-great choice!!!

  • I watched Lifetime with my first lol my son was born to the movie about that police officer who murdered his wives. (Forgot the name) and the Savannah Smart Abduction movie lol
  • My mom said she was listening to John Denver when I came into the world, lol. I think maybe John Mayer for me? I've always liked his music.

Because this is calming related (although not music related) I wanted to add that I brought a small string of twinkle lights when I was in labor last time and I was SO glad! It made me feel really cozy and I could avoid the bright overhead light.

This. I was so busy trying not to have a csection with all the complications that we both forgot. Glad I'm not the only one!
  • Lsager424 If you're the podcasting type, the "Analyze Phish" podcast is hilarious and a lot of fun to listen to. It's basically a huge Phish fan trying to convince a Phish skeptic of the glory of the band. I've gotten into podcasts in a big way since becoming pregnant because I take a lot of loooong walks, so figured I'd pass this along :)

My husband made an entire combo of my favorite stuff on his phone last time around because I couldn't decide and we never turned it on! Just forgot about it.. Wanted the baby out so bad nothing mattered but pushing
  • @nano1 LOVE that idea!!! Thanks for sharing!!! @phyllisnefler Analyze Phish was such an amazing podcast!! I was very sad when Harris passed away.

  • @lsager424 me too -- what a tragic loss. he was such a brilliant mind!
  • Last time DD came early so I didn't even think about music. Between the Ambien they gave me the night before and the drugs for the c-section I don't remember even thinking about music. This time I may go with the new Mumford and Sons or just all of their stuff, partially just because my husband hates them and I never get to listen to them around him...
  • Unfortunately I had a fully anesthetized emergency c-section but I did listen to a ton of music post delivery, especially at 3am feedings and found it very soothing, mostly pandora stations of my favorites like DMB, State Radio and Death Cab.

Yeah. I was completely oblivious to anything that was going on other than trying to get babies out of me. There could have been an entire marching band in the room and I don't think I would have really noticed.

I was oblivious to everything around me. I'm not sure I would have noticed music. My doula did have battery operated candles. And we turned most lights off and used those.

  • I didn't put a play list together last time and I think it would have helped.  I was in the L&D room for a very long time and the ex and his family turned the tv on instead of music or anything.  I ended up stuck watching World's Dumbest ... for about 8 or more hours before I kicked everyone out to get a nap.  <3 my epidural.

Anywho, this time I will definitely go into this with a playlist and anyone who touches the tv will get ejected.

  • @VexyMommy this is my first but I can only imagine how pissed I would have been in your situation. That's exactly why my husband and I will be the only ones in the room.

  • We had a playlist that ranged from reggae, 80's and 90's, and dirty rap. I made sure that I had music that motivated me during workouts and kept me going.

  • I love music, but not when in labor.  I didn't care what was going on around me... I just wanted the baby out and I was 100% focused on that task.  You could have had my favorite band in there for a live concert and I wouldn't have given a you know what.  That said, I know plenty of women who found it helpful to have music playing so make a playlist and see if your L&D room has a hookup (my hospital had iHomes)
  • Oh and Bright Eyes. I walked down the aisle to First Day of my Life. :)

You could also pick up some portable speakers for fairly cheap.  I got a pair of TDK's that are rated for outdoor and are water resistant.  They produce very good sound and would be great to attach to the stroller for you and baby when you start going out and about with your little ones.

No music for me. I will be in the operating room having a c-section. I had no music while in labor with my first, and I was in too much pain to even care. The sound of the NST machine freaking out (beeping very loudly) constantly for 24 hours (induced) because both our heart rates were sky high. It was enough noise to have to listen too.
  • When I was in labor with my son I was watching a law and order svu marathon on TV. The TV was on the same show when my son came into the world. When it came time to push I wasn't able to focus on anything other than getting the baby out.
  • Oh and Bright Eyes. I walked down the aisle to First Day of my Life. :)

I think I just fell a little more in love with you! I love Bright Eyes.
