Car seat experts, WWYD?

We have a Chicco Keyfit 30 that expires in Dec of this year. We bought it for my oldest and this will be my third baby, plus two friends used it in between. Would you get a new one even if it were your last child and would likely only ride in it until April or so of next year? I want to get a new one because I am a car seat freak, but my husband doesn't. I don't feel comfortable getting a used one because there is no way to know if it was involved in an accident. I also need to get another Keyfit30 because all of my stroller adapters are for that seat, so buying a less expensive seat isn't an option.

  • I might use it for a month or two, and then I'd get a convertible car seat that the baby could use rear facing to front facing, instead of buying a temporary infant car seat. But it sounds like you got a lot of use out of it.

  • I would use it until it expires then switch to a convertible.

I just really love the convenience of the infant seat for quick things like running my dd in to preschool in the morning. They are usually too heavy around 6 months to carry easily in the seat though.

I'd use it until it expires and then switch to a convertible seat as well. That's a lot of money to spend for a few months of use.
  • If you plan to use an infant seat past December-you will need to buy a new seat. You absolutely cannot use an expired seat. You can actually be held liable if something were to happen. We are in the same situation and are buying a new seat. It's not a great option but winter would be rough here without an infant seat.

  • Were on the same situation with the same car seat actually.
Does anyone know if the newer models will still fit in the bases or stroller adapters? The cost if the car seat is almost as much as buying new adaptors & bases.
  • I did some more research and the bases expire too! Ugh! I checked the date on my base and it is the same as the car seat. But stroller adapters should still fit.
  • This is just my opinion, but I would recommend getting a new Keyfit 30. Not only is yours close to expiration, but it sounds as though it has been heavily used if it has gone through 4 kids.  I'm not sure how wear and tear affects a car seat, but I'd err on the side of caution for something like that.

If the only thing not expiring is the stroller adapters, I would be tempted to just start over.  I mean, if you will need to get a new seat, with a new base, throwing in a set of stroller adapters shouldn't really affect the overall cost that much, and would mean that you could opt for a less expensive seat.

You also mentioned that you would also only be using the new seat, if you got one, until April of next year.  That's only 6 months - what happens at that point?  I thought infants needed to be restrained in a rear-facing seat for at least the first year, so you should be able to use the new seat until next October.

  • @twogirlsandagreen shoot. Guess I should get shopping.

@a.traugott it's recommended rear facing for at least two years. A lot of kids outgrow the height or weight limit for the infant car seat before then so you switch to a rear facing convertible seat. The convertible seat can face forward or backwards and will have height restrictions for both.
  • Our car seat doesn't expire for a year but we are still buying a new one and having this one at grandmas for emergencies.

I ended up ordering a new Chicco keyfit 30. I already have a convertible seat because of carpool (won't be carpooling to preschool anymore since its time for my oldest to start Kindergarten). The convertible won't expire for a quite a few years (Radian RXT has a 10 year expiration) . So I'm all set now! Not worth risking my baby's safety over $200!
  • Woohoo! Good call.  It's definitely worth the money, and it will be interesting to see whether the new Chicco has any cool features that weren't there before (not sure how frequently they change their seats).
