Should I push my Midwife??

I have just had a sizing scan and LO is looking to be atleast 10lb (They measured multiple times). My midwife thinks that because my last was 10lb 5oz I don't need an induction and should just go with it. I know that if she speaks to my OB she will induce me. I am petrified to deliver another massive baby, I'm 5ft 1 and pre baby weigh 50kg so it really takes a toll on me carrying all this weight! I'm usually such a strong advocate for myself but my midwife is making me feel like I'm stressing for nothing. What do you ladies think? Should I push harder for action or leave it to nature?

I would push for action, but that's probably not the popular opinion.

ETA: I wouldn't think anyone would induce before 39 weeks, but maybe that's just my doctor's practice...
  • If you already had a 10lb 5 oz baby your body is more than able to carry and deliver that size (although having all that extra weight must suck- im sorry!). Vaginally delivering a 10+ baby as your first is NOT usually a feat done easily, or at all with most women. I wouldn't push for induction unless you go over 40 weeks, your body seems to make and handle big babies well.

  • How many weeks are you?

I will say that a MW should be there to empower you to make decisions on your own.  So she should give you the info risks/benefits and the decision should be made together.  So if you feel as if you are not being heard that's a problem!

That being said, barring any other complications (GD for example) the ACOG does not recommend induction for suspected 'big baby' unless it is measuring 11lbs.  Growth u/s are notoriously inaccurate at this late in the game, however you do have a history of having had a big baby probably increasing the likelihood of it happening again.

I think you need more information, what's your Bishop Score?  What about a membrane sweep?  Did you have any complications resulting from delivering such a large baby?

If it makes you feel any better, second babies tend to be easier to deliver.  With my first I pushed for an hour she was 7lb15oz with a head in the 25th%.  DS was out in two pushes 8lb12oz and a head in the 75th%.
  • All I have to say is thoughts and prayers for a delivery you can handle and that your baby makes it here safely no matter the route/assistance you have.

  • I am currently 35 weeks, they wouldn't induce until 38 weeks. I feel like the fear of having another big baby is really going to impact on how I want to deliver. I know that my body can do it, but I don't think I'm in the right headspace to do it how I want. I've never had pain relief during labour and wanted to do that again, but the thought of that massive head coming out has already got me attempting to cross my legs! I'm in New Zealand and I can't see my OB without a referral, although a crazy, crying preggo woman might get me noticed! I really appreciate the feedback ladies
  • Yeah, I'd be stressing about the size ratios there, too. Just wanted to wish you well and hope that it all works out, however it goes!

  • Push her down the stairs? Just kidding I saw the title and giggled. Just to clarify.. If you are only 35 weeks... Remember measuring now and predicting is really only a guess, you did have a 10 pounder previously, that does not mean for sure you will again. I would wait, don't make a decision yet, or stress about it because who knows, you could naturally go into labor at 37 or 38 weeks... I would just maybe reevaluate things when you are 39... But I for sure would not induce before 39 weeks.
  • @KiwiMumof3 - do you have GD? What action do you want to push for? Maybe you could call an OB's office or L & D and get an opinion from a midwife there? I can only imagine the thoughts going through your head right now but remember that the scans can be off and even if you do have a 10lb baby - you have done it before med-free and without a doubt you can do it again!
  • No I don't have GD have been tested multiple times, I just make big babies! I'm going to have a rational non hormonal talk with my midwife and try and see what she thinks is best. If I can get my head around the fear I should be ok! Thanks ladies
