What surprised you during L & D?

I thought it would be fun to hear other's experiences

... Here's what surprised me - during my first delivery I had to stay in the bed in one position because my baby was stressed. However, this time I was able to change positions and found the thing that felt the best was a rocking chair. I didn't even know that was an option! Also, with both deliveries I tore and needed stitches. I didn't feel it with my first, but I for sure was feeling it this time and the stitches hurt!

  • I didn't know I could push a button to get extra meds through the epidural!

Looking at the mirror when pushing. It was a huge motivation. I thought it will be terrifying but ended up being the booster I needed to meet my baby.
  • I had to stay in bed too with mine because her heart rate dropped at the smallest movement. I had low amniotic fluid which caused cord compression. But whenever I got my epidural, the girl who did it for one had to do it like 3 times because she couldn't get it in right which was extremely painful! Then about two hours before I started pushing my epidural wore off completely. They kept giving me more medicine, but of course it didn't work what so ever!! So I felt everything from two hours before pushing started and everything during and after! I was pretty upset that it didn't work, because I was all for the epidural during my labor! I didn't want to feel a thing! Lol Oh well I guess, I'm so thankful for my sweet little girl. None of that pain mattered at all :)
  • I was surprised how numb I was from the epidural. I didn't feel the contractions at all and had to be coached to push. I had contractions all weekend so the rest the epidural provided was what I needed to be able to push.
  • I had a doctor spiking my son's hair while waiting for the next contraction go push his shoulders out... it was so weird how comfortable she was in the situation cuz I felt awkward!!
