Those are great! Note to self: bring breath mints.
Yup. Going to add a pack of mint lifesavers to my go bag. And maybe a few of those single use dry toothbrush things.
A friend of mine recommended getting sugar free jolly ranchers to throw into the cup with the ice chips just to give it some flavor. Thinking i may get some mints in addition to those lol
Definitely worth a laugh but (fortunately) most are not true for my personal nursing practice. I always tell the truth and the reasoning behind it is how will my patient trust me with their care if I don't tell them the truth.
I don't care what your breath or vagina smell like ..I would be personally offended if someone tried to wash me with a peri-wash.
And I always miss IVs! It's life, but I won't stick you more than twice before I get someone that can get your IV with their eyes closed.

I miss IV's all the time. We can only poke twice then hospital policy get someone else. Hilarious story...... We had a nurse who was forced to resign for other reasons that once said to a family ... " your naming her Penelope? That sounds like a skunk. Wasn't that the skunk in Bambi ?" Thank goodness we got rid of her.
I don't care about bad breath. I HAVE however told some patients that are reaking of smoke and unwashed clothes that we like them to hop in the shower before induction to relax them. Yep. Guilty. But I have to be smelling that gross unwashed smoke/bad hygiene smell for 12 hrs. I'm talking just the real bad offenders.... Not just you couldn't reach to wipe !
i'm with you @mellymar ! I'm seriously hoping i'll have enough time in pre-labor to shower, shave my legs, maybe try to groom myself a little so i dont walk into L&D looking and smelling like a wildebeest. Half for my own comfort and half for the comfort of the nurses and my poor husband who has to own up to boning the crazy pregnant lady.
When I had my c section with my twins I had the best nurse after wards. The day after my section I smelled so bad but I could barely move to do anything and I made my way to the bathroom and she came in and washed me. I was so thankful for her. It takes a special caring person to love there job that much to help out a complete stranger. I wish I had a nurse like her every time.
Haha, hilarious (with lots of truth) although I never have said there would be no more pain after. I love IVs they are my thing.. Everyone usually has me do theirs because they know I love it. As far as allergies! That one made me laugh because I always apologize ahead of time for my sniffles (MOST the time it is allergies ) seriously don't stress about smells, if you were really funky I'd clean you up without you knowing why... Just part of our job - and if I felt hygiene was an ongoing problem.. I would include in my teaching about baby hygiene..how important it is for "mom to shower..wash..etc" to where they get the point without making them feel like crap
If everyone could notice.... I said it's not your typical smells I would suggest a shower for! It's the people who don't shower EVER and smoke 2 packs a day.
You all will need help after with pericare, especially if you had a section the nurses will be the ones cleaning down there. There will be lots going on so don't feel bad , it's part of our job and we do it all the time, and have seen, smelt, IT ALL.. along with sometimes wearing your body fluids.

I noticed! But I'm going to try for that shower all the same. Like @Mommaswizz says, maybe shave my legs, maybe try to get in mow of the lawn for easier care after... Even tho I know its gonna get all yucky down there in short order and quite soon I'll be sweating madly with pain and effort, at least when I go IN I'll have made a first impression, lol.

I brought sugar free jello powder last time, and didn't end up using it, but I was so looking forward to trying it! Too many nausea issues to make it sound good.
Seriously bless you nurses @klkonwi@HayesRN13 and @dancegirl1118 !! My mother is a L&D nurse and i know she always goes out of her way for her patients. It takes a special kind of person to do all the work you ladies do! I wish any or all of you were at my hospital when the time comes for me!
One wish I have on the patients side is that they'd STOP apologizing to their nurses for whatever they feel is embarrassing. It is my job and my passion to care for you, changing your pads and underwear, cleaning up blood, and any sounds/bodily functions that happen are part of that. Don't be ashamed of anything happening during/after labor to your body...you don't need to apologize to us for it!

When I really stop to think about it, it truly just blows my mind what nurses do all day long to keep people healthy, safe, and comfortable. It's an absolutely amazing profession.

This is me. I do serious apologizing. I just feel so bad!
The only thing I ever accept apologies for is when patients are really nasty to me during labor. Believe me, it's not just run of the mill normal annoyance or being short (everyone's allowed to be crappy during labor, you have a torpedo coming out of your vagina). But the REALLY nasty patients get to me...however those are the ones that usually don't apologize anyway, because it isn't just labor making them nasty.

Seriously, nurses are a rare breed! I couldn't be happier going to CNM's instead of an OB. I don't know how those ladies manage to be such cool, competent professionals while remaining so genuinely friendly and down-to-earth.

He settles her in her home as a happy mother of children, praise the Lord! (Psalms 113:9)
And the peace of God, which surpasses all understand, will guard your heart and mind in Jesus Christ (Philippians 4:7)
My dad was in the room with me. I was 19 and had no mother at the time. He was great. He DID stay at my head . I'm sure some people think its weird but I needed someone who could make descions if needed.
The thing I worry about is shaving. I haven't made up my mind about strangers seeing my bush. I guess the nurses don't care but it's embarrassing.
How do you guys feel about hemorrhoids? ...Ugh I just realized there won't be any sneaky poo wiping with a sore butthole. I am totally gonna know if I poo this time.
Ughh I've tried to get over it but I can't and never will...I don't want to be lied to if I poop. I asked my nurse last time and my husband and they both said I didn't poop. It weighs heavy on my mind, I need to know if I poop. It felt like I did poop. Don't lie if we poop, people! Lol!
so nurses, can you please tell me how to be a good patient? I like to believe that I am an easy, go-with-the-flow type of person... but maybe everyone believes that. I wouldn't ring the bell for more ice, or anything obvious like that. I am someone who says please and thank you, and makes stupid jokes to keep things light. But are there some obvious-to-you but maybe all-too-common things that people do?
@amark11 I can promise you will be a fine pt, you aren't the self entitled princess type....I really have no issues unless someone purposely try to be high maintenance..but I'm telling you if you need more ice..you can ring the bell there is nothing wrong with that! It always stresses me out if you think you are bugging us by asking for things..that's what we are there for , but you would be amazed what some people do, but then there is the opposite those who worry.. Please don't if you need help or need something.. Press your darn button ;;) ...(this will vary depending on what process you are in..in labor we are pretty much in the room at least every 30 minutes..and depending on what's going on for longer amounts of time..and postpartum we do hourly rounds so that really helps out both sides) remember , you will need help...that's why you are in the hospital
@amark11 as for labor, my idea of a "good" patient doesn't have much to do with behavior...it has to do with education. While I enjoy going over points of labor etc, not knowing anything and being in a panic isn't the most conducive environment to learning and basically makes me feel like I'm babysitting and hand-holding for my whole shift.
Ask for all the ice you want, I will gladly get it for you! Need labor support? Assistance with breathing techniques? Advice on positioning? Candid opinions about pain management? No problem!
Frankly you shouldn't have to worry about being a good patient. It's your labor, and it's my job. Even with the most difficult patient it is still my job and I provide you the same care. Your main concern should be doing all you can for the health and safety of yourself and child, done so by being an educated healthcare consumer!
