Bottles for breastfeeding

Any suggestions on the best bottles to use when breastfeeding??? There are so many kinds I don't even know where to begin!

Re: Bottles for breastfeeding

  • I used the Medela bottles that came with my pump and my daughter did great with them.

I used Avent in the past; I liked the breast-like nipples even though I switched to formula. It builds up baby's jaw strength.

This makes me happy to hear! FTM here too and I plan on BF. I did some research and ended up registering for a few Avent Natural bottles. Hoping they'll work out :]
  • My sister recommended tommee tippee to me. Never used them but they have good reviews so I'm going to give them a try. Almost ALL the reviews about avent say they leak like crazy. I have one I got for free from Motherhood Maternity that I'll give a fair shot to as well.
  • In the beginning, Avent were the best for us (slow flow). The medela bottles that come with the pump are great, just a little faster flow. She dug those, too, which made life easy. There's also a medela nipple that is supposed to be more breast-like, but I never tried it.

  • I breastfed and tried using the ones my pump provided but my son like the ventaire by playtex. It all depends on your child. I guess the ventaire was my like my nipple than any of the other brands and to him it felt more natural but like I said, it all depends on your baby.

Leak issues are due to user error. When putting nipples back in you have to make sure they're not curled on the underside of the lid.

  • I wouldn't stock up too much on one brand until baby comes. I went through 5 brands, tommee tippee worked best, but my LO hated bottles, and I had a long leave, so I gave up and just BF until she took a sippy.

  • My first refused any bottle. We used to tommee tippee with our second and loved them.

Ditto! I only registered for a few bottles ... figured I would try them out and make sure baby likes them before stocking up! Then once I find one baby likes I can buy a bunch more :) I've also heard great things about Dr. Brown bottles, but that they're definitely harder to clean.

I had great luck with Tommee Tippee
  • I used Dr. Brown in the beginning. He did great with those when it was breast milk. Once I switch to formula he refused them. I had a free Similac bottle laying around so we tried it and he loved it. I am going to have to start pumping much sooner with this baby so I plan to try the medela for convenience.
  • I registered for a Kiinde Twist set from Target. Supposedly is an all in one, storage then snap into bottle form. Idk. Maybe something to look into.
  • My BEST advice here is to get the ones that are the most like breasts. Obviously none of them will be perfect. I use tomee tippee and have heard good things about avent as well.  I used the natural flow nipples to teach K how to suck and they worked great.  She had jaw issues I believe from being born forceps birth as well as being a sleepy nurser and those really helped her gain the strength and coordination she needed.

  • I registered for Avent natural glass bottles and the plastic ones as well. My mother in law swears that glass bottles are the best, so I figured I would try both of them.

I went through multiple brands when pregnant with my son. Avent were terribly leaky for me. I finally ended up with Dr. Browns and they were great. Plan to use them again.
  • Adiri natural nursers are AMAZING!! Just like breast and my youngest had no issues with nipple confusion with these!! Expensive but WELL worth it!!
  • We registered for the doctor brown naturals. I didn't breast feed my 1st son and plan on breast feeding this time around. Dr. Brown were the only bottles my son could use so I figured we are just gonna go for it. Cleanin them isn't an issue as long as you don't let them sit too long and get gunky. Best of luck!
  • I personally liked the Playtex Ventaire bottles. My son had no problem taking to them and they reduced the air he got when drinking (thus less gas later). I have heard good things about the Medela as well but it really does depend on your baby. My SIL tried to use the Medela but they didn't work out for her baby. She ended up buying cheaper bottles and her baby took right to them.
  • Anyone try the Joovy Boob bottles? That is what I've registered for! I talked to some staff at both Babies R Us and Buy Buy Baby, and have heard alot if great things about them. I too have heard alot of complaints about leaking with the Avent Naturals, because that was my original choice!
