Solid food

How's it going if you're doing it?

My LO is 20 weeks old.  He's getting BM and supplementing with formula (I can't seem to pump enough at work to keep up).  He has his first tooth and has hit all the "signs" that he is ready for solid food - sitting up with support, definitely interested, constantly hungry and hard to satisfy, etc.  In fact, it's hard to keep him out of our dinner, and he nearly stole a cookie out of my mouth the other day!  He is over 18 lbs and I'm just thinking it is time.

Yes, I know 6 months is the recommendation. This is a great article, if anyone is interested: https://scienceofmom.com/2015/05/14/starting-solids-4-months-6-months-or-somewhere-in-between/

  • I'm using the Moms On Call format and I like that it tells you in days what to feed when! Us FTM's need structure lol and they also encourage starting at 4-5 months.

  • My doctor gave us the go ahead at LOs 4 month check up. He said to start with cereal, oatmeal, sweet potatoes, carrots, squash, then go from there adding things like fruit and green stuff. Always trying new stuff for 1-2 days then waiting a day to see if everything is A-OK. So I've been slowly introducing foods. So far so good. He loves to eat. Doc said to just do 1-2 meals at this point. So we do oatmeal around 10 am and then a veggie around 7 pm. At this point I think more ends up on him then in him lol.
  • We tried rice cereal a few times, but DD keeps throwing it up.  She's been sick with a cold for the last few weeks so I'm hoping that is the issue- if it continues, obviously we'll need to address that with her pedi.  She did great with the spoon aspect of it though!

  • I started at 4.5 months. Started with rice cereal and she loved it. Now I do hard boiled egg yolk and yogurt.
  • Well DS has been fussy eating oatmeal for the past few days and was upset today when I gave him sweet potatoes so I'm gonna hold off for another week and try again. He's 21 weeks now. It's okay to completely drop solids once you've started right??

This past Saturday, we gave our DD some inside of french fries, she is really starting to want to eat what we do.  Our Dr though would prefer if we hold back a few more weeks since he doesn't like that my family tends to be larger and heavier than average children of similar age and our children don't work well with current height/weight charts.

For those who started solids at 4 months how many times a day do you feed your LO? My LO is 5 and a half months and I only give once a day but will sometimes give a few spoonfuls at supper time when we are eating so she's included. For example this morning I gave some mango and oatmeal. Tonight I gave pea, sweet potato and squash purée.
  • I started my son at 4 months per his pedi due to slow weight gain. I EP so he's EBF and is off the charts for weight. Hes just really small cause he drinks plenty. So he hated plain cereal so I added in some purees. 1 at a time for 3 days in a row. We've had no issues and he LOVES it. Just started making my own purees and he's loving them too! He's 5 months now (22 wks) and I think Im gonna add in solids for breakfast too since he's still not gaining much and doing so well with the solids.
  • I started my DS on solids at four months per our pedi's approval. We skipped the cereal due to constipation issues. We started with orange veggies (sweet potato, butternut squash, carrots) then added some fruits, pears and mangoes. Now at 24 weeks he gets two plum organic pouches a day. 3.5 Oz each. I either put it in a bowl if I feel like he is more hungry and I will add some oatmeal or I attach a spoon to the pouch and he basically drinks down the pouch by using the spoon as a straw or a bottle. He also loves watermelon and this week we will try avocado and next week we are thinking peanut butter.
  • Has anyone had better luck with one type of spoon over another? My LO is 22 weeks old and definitely interested but I don't think he likes the spoons I got him.
  • Dr Brown's spatula spoons.  They easily hold a lot of food and yet since they're flat on the bottom, push her tongue down so it's easier to swallow.  DD2 loves them just like my first did.

    What is moms on call?

  • It's a book written by 2 pediatric nurses, just google it!
  • We did local, organic avocados this weekend — LO was super curious but ultimately didn't like them. We've moved onto sweet potato and he's liking that much better. Although he's spitting up more now. Going to ask the doc about this on Thurs. Anyone else have this issue?

  • We started just after he turned 5 months because he started pounding down 30-40 oz. of formula a day. I puréed a sweet potato and now am getting him ready to try carrots, green beans, and peas. I skipped the cereals, I figured the benefit is the extra iron and he's getting plenty of that from the formula.
